I've made some changes. Current quiver

2016 Head Supershape iRally 163cm
2016 Stockli Laser AX 167cm
2017 Atomic Vantage 90cti 169cm
2017 Meier Wild Bill 170cm
2018 Nordica Santa Ana 110 169cm

Probably going to pick up a tuned down race ski at some point as I miss the biting edge grip of my Atomic Redsters. I also fancy the Volkl Kanjo which would be overlap but we'll see.

  • 2017 Nordica Santa Ana 100, 161, waist 100 - daily driver
  • 2014 Rossignol Star 7, 162, waist 116 - powder skis
  • 2013 Nordica Nemesis, 154, waist 98 - rock skis

Looking to possibly add a more carving-oriented ski in the mid-70s to mid-80s waist. So far have demo'ed the following:
  • Volkl Yumi 154, waist 84 - nope, not stable enough at speed
  • Volkl Yumi 161, waist 84 - nope, didn't do anything for me
  • Head Total Joy 158, waist 85 - maybe - liked it, carved well, but still went through the crud
  • Head Super Joy 158, waist 75 - maybe - liked it a bit more than the Total Joy for carving; also went through the crud (surprisingly)
  • Black Crows Vertis Birdie 159.3, waist 85 - nope, felt too all-mountain-y for what I want

And planning to test out a few more....

Last March I started to change my quiver completely. I went from this

IMG_0892.jpg

Fischer Hannibal 100, backcountry skis
Nordica Soul Rider, powder skis
Head Rev 80, ice and packed snow/mogul skis

Now I've got this:

Kastle FX85, packed snow/mogul skis
Kastle TX90, backcountry skis
Volkl 100Eight, powder skis, which I haven't even skied yet!

Well working in a ski shop has really grown it a lot.

In order of acquisition

Salomon Rocker2 90
RMU S-CRM 100 (prototype)
Armada JJ
Blizzard Rustler 10
Salomon QST 99
Volkl VTA 108

I would honestly like to consolidate a bit since there is some overlap.

@nemesis256 - what's your analysis of the MX74 skis? They pique my interest for a potential corduroy, packed/ice ski for early season (or drought seasons) here in Tahoe. But I don't know anywhere I can demo it. Since it's not super cold here, our early season snow starts as crusty corduroy, but ends up in cruddy moguls by the end of the day. I'm assuming these would kill it on the groomed terrain, but would this ski get through the crud and still be nimble enough to get through those pushed-snow moguls at the end of the day? I should be able to demo a MX84 later in the season when we get a bit more snow. Do you have any idea how similar they are? Thanks!

They're excellent on groomers, very stable and love to go fast. It's the first ski that gave me the ability to carve on boilerplate ice. I still haven't gotten used to the sensation. I'm so used to having my skis slipping from underneath me on ice that it now feels like someone is hitting the brakes. I had to detune the tip to get them to feel good though. They came from the factory with a razor sharp tip and it made them feel "catchy" and a bit resistant to turns. After detuning that was fixed. They'll plow through small piles of snow no problem, but I'm not sure about moguls. I haven't tried them in moguls but the stiffness of them would probably be a bit of a challenge. I haven't skied the MX84, but I did ski the MX89, and that was WAY too much ski for me. Same stability but very slow to turn due to the weight. My guess is that if you demo the MX84, if you like how they go through the snow you're talking about but find them slow to turn, you'll like the MX74. I'm 5'7" 130lbs.

Thanks @nemesis256. I wouldn’t necessarily take the MX74 on a deliberate mogul run. It’s more the mixed conditions that build up at the end of the day out here. For reference, I’m 5’1”, 112 - so would look at the 156 and the MX84 in the 160.
