I think using too long poles as turn shapes have evolved has caused plants that should have been no more than touches resulting in wrists getting jammed.

Lots of "depends" on that thought.

Depends on the turns you are making, your skiing style, what you are trying to do, how you do you pole plant, terrain, snow condition, mental attitude, etc....
