Day 54. Good groomer day. Tons of ankle biter-sized kids for some reason. Started out sunny, then got overcast. Needed to resort to "falling leaf" on one of the lower trails. The snow is in a race with the calendar.

40 is my likely final tally of ski days for the season.

This was one of the most challenging seasons of my ski race coaching career. We were chasing snow all winter long. And when we had camps planned they always got some sort of spanner thrown into the works (e.g. warm and rainy weather for Killington just after the World Cups, rain and flooding just prior to our Sunday River camp).

My main mountain, Liberty Mountain, opened on MLK weekend and only with three beginner trails. My team had to decamp to Timberline Mountain, WV, for two straight weekends just to get time on snow.

Once Liberty was really open it was quite good. I applaud mountain management for blowing deeper, narrower trails rather than spreading things thin to get wider coverage. That saved their bacon through the frequent warm spells - we only had a handful of good snowmaking days and nights during the season.

Races got moved around hither, thither, and yon. Our already compressed racing season went from 7 weeks down to effectively 4 weeks - the athletes and coaches got tired quickly. The high point of the racing season was a speed camp at Okemo, VT, where we had incredible conditions for working on speed concepts and one of the best racing surfaces I've ever seen on our SG race day.

Last weekend was USSS Eastern U18/21 Finals at Gore Mountain, NY, which is where things likely ended for the season. At least we had a blissful blower powder day on Saturday. I only got a couple tastes of the goodness as we had to remove all of that fresh snow from the racing trail to get to the icy racing surface - but my, oh my, that powder was as light as I've ever seen in the east.

I had 5 wonderful days on snow in Utah a couple of weeks back, including one blower powder day at my home mountain of Solitude. That was great. And I finally invested in some "play boots," a pair of Atomic Hawx Ultra 130 XTDs. Yes, they are a lot softer than the plugs I usually ski in but they're a lot more fun in powder.

Now I'm pivoting toward two wheels, pedals, and lycra until the snow flies again.
Out here on the west coast (PNW for me) things were a bit sketchy at times weather wise too. One or two weeks were rained out. We had a stretch of 10 days where it wasn't even at freezing for overnight lows and daytime highs in the 50's; but then we got a big storm and the season recouped. There was one day in February when I though one of the main runs on mt favorite local hill (Lucky Shot at Crystal Mtn, WA) looked like it was done for the year; but the groomers worked miracles moving snow around and it was near perfect the very next day. We have minimal snow making around here, and then only on some of the lower mtn, which I am only on when I am done for the day. Sounds like Sunday River Camp lived up to it's name! Again, thought things were winding down and then we had several inches (5-9) more snow this week! So, the lifts will spin until mid-late April once again.

Yesterday was an absolutely great day 28 (and final day of my season, it turns out)… until it wasn’t.

Literally moments from the village area at Sunshine Village at the end of the day, I hit a small depression on a traverse, fell forward, and broke my fibula. One sled ride, one wheelchair gondola adventure, one incredible ski instructor who drove me in my car to the hospital, and one unexpected night in Banff with my surprisingly capable 14yo (who I have discovered is exactly who I want with me in a crisis) until my husband could bus up and drive us and my car the rest of the way home. Now awaiting a decision if I need surgery but it’s looking likely.

Ski patrol were outstanding and really can’t say enough good things about them. Anyone who can get a ski boot off a broken ankle with only a little extra discomfort is a magician.

it was a stunning sunny day but the only picture I took wound up being this one:

Bummer, me season ended this Tuesday (Mar 26, 2024) in a similar fashion (broken Tibia and thumb.) I was still at the top (freak accident at 5mph before I even made it to the slope) I was able, with some major pain, to hoof it back the 15yrds to the gondola and ride it back down, and gimp over to the ski patrol. Like you said, magician with getting the boot off. Then he went down, retrived my truck from the lot, got all my gear in the back for me, wheeled my out in a wheelchair and got me into my truck. Got home, had x-rays, had surgery on Thursday (3/28/24) and having the thumb looked at by a hand specialist next week.

I hope you heal up quickly! I had surgery 2 days later, I’m now 2 weeks post fracture, and I’m allowed to start putting some weight on it. Looks gross but feels surprisingly not bad, and I start physio this week.

Day 30. I thought last week was gonna be my last, but management decided to open again. It's an actual ice rink for the first couple hours but now I'm finding some slush at 3pm. Supposed to rain tonight, if that actually happens we will be closed for the season.
