Yeah, I'd be really nervous they decide to check them as I'm boarding, regardless of having to pay for it -- they'd be bopping around bag-less. Maybe it's just much ado about nothing since it's a non-stop flight -- less chance of my luggage heading to San Diego or something.

(despite the "no way's" in the crowd, lol, I'm not going to be the headline the next day "Outraged skier escorted off plane after making an expletive-filled scene at the top of the aisle when attendant attempted to take his ski boots. However, observers state, 'His hair... was perfect.' Charges pending.")

You are really underestimating the ineptness of the airlines.:roflmao: Do you really think everyone saying "carry-on you boots" doesn't come from some basis of experience? :ogcool:

My last trip to Denver, the DIA oversize luggage deal broke down, so I was delayed about an hour before I insisted the luggage agent take a claim so I could get out of the airport after a 17 hour trip (it's a long story). So she's taking my information when a mechanic opens the door, and I see my ski bag sitting on the floor TEN FEET AWAY! from me. the boneheads never thought to push the stopped luggage through the door. And don't say they are getting better. This happened in March this year.

I've checked or gate checked my boots 4 or 5 times on late season return trips. They were lost twice.

In my experience, depends on what seat you're in (aisle, middle, window). At least on United, many planes have a metal bar under the aisle seats that chops up the available storage space, so only quite narrow bags/objects will fit. If you're in a window, you will have more useful under seat storage available. Middles seem ok too, but I haven't paid close attention to middles.

Gads. Maybe I'll upgrade my ticket!

Not a bad idea........Look at the price spread and the advantages between United's basic economy and the standard economy products. The peace of mind alone for being able to bring a carryon along with your boots seems be well worth the cost.

That bar under the seat area in front is standard across all seats because it prevents bags from shifting forward during the flight. I've never had any problems with United, albeit I fly with them between 40-65K miles per year, but there are some basic strategies for making sure you get to actually carry on your carryon bag. The biggest, be one of if not the first in your boarding group line and wait. Just do it. Get in line to increase the probability of getting your items inside the main cabin of the aircraft. Unless you're an elite flyer on United or any other carrier there is no guarantee that there will be room for your carryon or boots.

well you sign up for the credit card for $99/year and you buy your way into group2 and 1 checked bag to the disdain of all the frquentflyers who got their status from actually flying.

i think at checkin they'll upsell you on priority for like $40, so you can buy your status a la carte too

I'm not referring to the bar that runs along under the fronts of all the seats to prevent shifting forward, but the bar that runs parallel to the aisle on aisle seats. It makes the space much less usable on some planes. Some airlines and/or plane configurations don't seem to have it, but in my experience most UAL planes (at least the ones that are a 3 and 3 configuration) do seem to have the bar on aisle seats (example--I just flew Jetblue BOS to PHX in an aisle and said bar did not exist).

Ahhhhhh United's basic economy product. Great in concept and execution for the basic no baggage flyer but questionable for the skier. A 27 under the United economy product seat is going to be tight. Try stowing them in the overheard because at the end of the day the flight attendants will not be paying full attention and will be focused on getting the aircraft ready for departure which should afford you a little time. Be forewarned, you will have to pay if they dont fit. As a United frequent flyer I've seen people get dinged for items not fitting under the seat.

I watched a guy nearly get removed from a flight because he tried to put a bag up when he'd only purchased a basic economy ticket. He got very mouthy about how UA never told him about this rule (completely false, in order to purchase a basic economy ticket on UA you have to affirmatively agree to the baggage policy) and then proceed to start videoing his tantrum which is against policy for the employees' safety and privacy. In the end the captain gave the FA the option to have him removed or allow him to stay with the caveat that the video be deleted and the phone stay with the purser until he disembarked. The FA allowed the passenger to stay on the flight.

Glad they took a stand, really. A pet peeve of mine is someone coming on with a big carry-on PLUS a crew-served backpack, and stuffing both plus their coat up in the bin -- eventually some poor sods wind up with no space for their own carry-on overhead.

Oh me too. I went so far as to go to the back during flight and tell the FA that I witnessed the entire debacle and should she need a witness statement I'd be happy to provide one. The guy was a complete arse.

I saw a passenger get removed a few years ago due to overhead drama. He was seated when someone else moved his pack aside in the overhead to squeeze theirs in too - he started to stand and yelled at him not to touch his stuff and that was "his spot".

The FA told him that it was not, and they were trying to accommodate all bags. He was grumpy but sat back down.

Then as the FA was finishing arranging things he said something more to the FA... I guess it was something rude, because the FA left, and came back a minute later with security who escorted that guy off the plane. People seemed to appreciate it.

Nope. I got religion a long time ago on making sure I wasn't the last guy in line getting on board.

I was reading some ware that you get to have a carry-on and one small additional bag. The reason the article said was that a woman can have a carry-on and a hand bag so they could not stop a guy from having a small bag as well as a carry-on. Testing that is when I had to travel on business and they let me have a carry-on and the bag for my lap top.

Delta's basic economy allows a checked bag and personal still ). I like Delta, I hate United lol. I cancelled a United flight when Robin booked me on them thinking it was US Air and paid the cancellation fee to rebook with someone I trust. I haven't flown with United since I spent 31 hours getting to Utah and they promised a room for their broken plane to 12 passengers sent from Charlotte to Washington late at night after 5 hours or more delay, and a flight out from Washington (DC) in the morning. We all got there and the United attendants said there was no note on the file and would not give anyone the promised room, said our flight was delayed due to weather... there was no no bad weather in Charlotte at the time, it was a mechanical problem. Never flew them again.

It's more clear on the UA site, but it's really easy to end up with a basic economy ticket from Expedia (and probably other third party sites) without intending to agree to that policy because they bury the details amongst the extensive terms and conditions.
