I'll give you this much...I wear my sandals in ski towns inside my condo or house with socks on b/c its chilly. But I don't wear them out into the snowy winter where someone might see me....

Kids here will walk to school in shorts and slide ons, when it's 20F out.

Socks with sandals is an old man thing. Sometimes you need to go there. Chacos with ski socks is a real pleasure for me.
