The only way I could do that would be in a minivan. I'd throw the skis & board on top and forget about it. If you're renting near a ski resort ski racks or boxes should be available.

We rent the Ford Explorer for our family of 4 with 4 pairs of skis and all our luggage when travelling to the US. Have done many long days on the road in that configuration and never had any problems (other than the usuals, like bickering kids). Looked at the Suburbans etc but at that size felt like it was like using a jackhammer to open a can of tuna.

BTW, we've always been surprised how hard it is to find rental cars in the US with roof racks or roof boxes.

the ski rack should be easy in skibased airports from all the major. the issue is it is an addon option, and so you have to prerequest it and often a reservation is nonbinding so they dont actually seti it until you arrive
Looking for an advise on the size of SUV to rent to drive 4 adults with 2 pair of skies and 2 boards and some luggage of course :) for about 3 hours from the airport to the resort. Don't want to mess with the ski rack and want to fit everything inside. Would standard SUV like Ford Flex work or need a full size like Suburbann ? Any ideas, suggestions greatly appreciated.
if its 2 pairs of skis and not 2 sets of double ski bags should be fine. as well as how well the snowboarders packed their boards (e.g. removed bindings or not) and how they packed the rest of their luggage.

that being said, if they are grown adults perhaps they are willing to chip in for comfort.
especially if this is something you need to repeat every ski day.

Also how many days and how long do you need the vehicle. sometimes a shuttle maybe less hassle.
