Yes, but you have to go faster than the car you are passing. In northern Ontario, believe it or not, a large portion of the Trans-Canada Highway is only one lane in each direction, with an occasional extra lane for passing. Some people dawdle along below the limit until you reach an opportunity to safely pass them (sometimes a long straight with no one coming, but more often a passing lane), then they speed up to avoid being passed, when you are finally able to pass them. :nono:
This standard operating procedure in California, they always speed up !!!

They always camp in the left lane

You always end up passing on the right

They are always are on the cell phone oblivious to everything

I recommend as much displacement as your wallet can afford to combat these issues

It's law here that if there are two lanes (or more), the slower moving traffic must be in the right lane. it's rarely enforced but...
Its law here too, but people don't seem to know it.
I don't remember it being like this in Michigan, but out here, Oy!
I feel like most of the drivers who *park* in the left lane have California plates.

We have a joke in Nevada. - We have a new handicap plate in NV. Its white and says California on it.

California drivers prioritize 25 things while they're behind the wheel of the car, unfortunately none of them is driving.

PS 30 mph over the limit here could mean car impoundment, a $10,000 speeding ticket and immediate roadside one week driving suspension, which does make it a little bit more risky to pass these MFs. (if you saw Prophets of Rage, you know what MF stands for)

Has that always been the law? When I went to college in Buffalo, I used to take my Scirocco up to Canada to see how fast I could get it to go. Figured the speeding ticket wouldn't follow me back to the states (to my dad).

In NJ, failure to yield is 2 points and not keeping to the right is another 2 points for a potential 4 point ticket. Both are unrelated to speeding. Getting caught 15mph over the speed limit is 4 points. Many moons ago, I talked my way out of 2 speeding tickets by pointing this out to the cop. I was let off with warnings both times.

BTW, none of this is ever enforced these days. I can do 80mph in the middle lane while people hog the left lane doing 5 under the speed limit and a cop wouldn't notice anything wrong.

I saw the opposite of this guy today. I-93 between Tilton and Concord. Cop going 55mph in the left lane of a 70mph zone. I was stuck behind this a-hole for like 20 miles. If I had been closer I would have passed him at 70mph and driven away. I don't know if that would have been legal or not, but he did finally pull over a blue Jeep Wrangler that tried going around him. I was a half dozen cars back, so hard to tell exactly why he stopped the jeep.

The only time I see that is when there are high winds and the police are escorting at a lower speed limit, but that's not what you experienced.

Related to the thread:
I left the house at the exact same time on Friday and Saturday to work at the bike shop. Speed limit between Reno and Truckee = 65 mph
On Friday, the flow of traffic was 70-75 mph with few left lane park and drive issues.
On Saturday, the flow of traffic was 60-65 mph, mostly on the 60 mph side because there was a lot of semi traffic in the right lane and one guy saving us all from our speeding fate parked in the left lane keeping the flow at 60-65. When we were coming around a bend, I started to count the cars in front of me. I was #18, there were at least a half dozen behind me, probably more.

I got to the shop 7 minutes later on Saturday. Its a good thing I usually set myself up to be at work early.

If I drive a consistent 65 mph, it should take me 33 minutes from garage to parking space.

Was there an accident ahead that maybe the cop was trying to keep people away from? In that case they could have turned on the blue lights.

That's around where I got a ticket after being clocked by aircraft the day after Thanksgiving. I considered fighting it but it wasn't worth the drive since it was my first ticket in 20 years. I give them credit for pulling over an equal amount of out of state plates as NH plates.

Nope. I drove all the way to Boston and saw nothing of the sort.
