I think it's great when people apply a little ingenuity like this instead of following the mantra "You need a good set of vises!"

Good job, Dwight.

Thanks Karl.

I always tell be people you need a good set of these. Vises are a pain.

I don't need no fancy bar clamps and stuff. I made these a couple of days ago:

I have a Workmate for when I need to work on the bases, but that's what I'm gonna use for side edge touch ups. It saves the effort of setting up the Workmate.

A search for DIY ski vises turns up lots of images and plans. Some use cords to hold the skis in place left-right or pulled down to hold them firmly. The ones above look like good ones.

My wife says I have too many v̶i̶c̶e̶s̶ vises already.

How often do you work on edges but not bases? Also, are you going to tune out there, or is that just for the pic?

I do the bases before I put my skis away for the summer, then once a year, then just repair damage. I do the side edges with a coarse stone every couple of days, at least until spring.

I live in an apartment and I almost always work outside now. Those things are nailed to the rail.

I hot wax them at the end of the season, then liquid wax when I feel the need.

Wow annual base damage repairs! You need to come to Big Sky and let you bases get field worked more.
I do base repairs whenever I need to, but only the carving skis get the twice a week edge grind. The last time I went to Big Sky I just filled the core shots and hammered the edges straight.
