well since you don't want to break the bank....go to goodwill and get a couple tennis rackets and then just tie them to your old tennis shoes with some zipties. Grab a couple branches from a tree for poles and bada bing bada boom you're all set to go....:Cristmassnow:

We keep Tubbs at the condos. Still have my first pair of Tubbs I bought in 1996 and still going strong. We will be getting Tubbs for the kids next year.

We usually snowshoe in a pair of Merrill GTX boots with Outdoor research Gotetex gaiters.

We snowshoe quite a bit and prefer snowshoes that are both good for float, but also have metal crampon style edges for icy/slippery/packed down surfaces. I can say you should absolutely stay away from the Costco Yukon Charlie snowshoes - biggest waste of $80. We bought them for DD - they are good for neither float nor grip, and she broke them the first steeper downhill she went on. Tubbs are good. I love MSRs. We have lightning ascents, but they have a lower pricepoint snowshoe - the EVOs, which are still fantastic, and you can get extenders for those. The extenders are great because, if there's a lot of snow, you can add them, and if there isn't, your snowshoes are a bit smaller and easier to walk around in. Both DD and DS now have the EVOs.

Here they are on sale at REI:

They're awesome, and buy the snowshoe extender tails. These REVOs also look good;
