I have a friend who wants to get back into skiing again. He skied off and on for a few years but never enough to get past the beginner phase and skiing in a wedge. He has his own boots and is looking for a ski that will help him progress. He also plans on taking lessons to help him along. He’s a 63yo guy who is about 5” 4” and weighs around 150-160 or so. He is fairly athletic off of the snow. Any thoughts on skis? It doesn’t have to be a current year model and he’s not the type to drop $600+ on skis.

Any all mtn ski from the past 3 or 4 years, somewhere chin to forehead height should be fine to learn on. Check that it doesn't have metal, which for that size and weight and ski level will inhibit beginner learning.
Stay cheaper; buy used from like powder7 with a system/demo binding, or from local shops. Better yet find hand me down that is near free and he won't have a money excuse, and can mentally set aside that $600 instead for the trips and lessons. Potentially post in the marketplace if someone has something to sell for cost.

If he's starting from scratch, the never-ever and 2nd day beginners lessons often is a package that comes with skis (can still use own boots).

Is renting an option? Might be better off renting as he "gets back into it" and trying out some different skis, and then get a sense of what he likes most.

What type of snow is he going to ski on or in?
Skiing mostly really hard groomed snow would suggest a softer flexing narrow ( 68 to 76 mm) cambered ski.
Skiing mostly softer snow, even if groomed would suggest a wider (80 to 96 mm) snow with rocker or at least tip rise.

He will ski mostly man made, hard groomed snow.
