Or 55 to 91 to 15. Just depends on when they leave/where in Santa Ana.

All that to say, here's a +1 for driving.
91 tends to get jammed up, at certain points, unless you pay the toll for the fastrak lane to bypass traffic (and it's usually worth it)

Your Hyundai Elantra , carry chains for sure. Unless you come up in the middle of a storm you s/b fine. Roads are plowed quickly.
I did Mammoth, average 120 days a year in a FWD Hyundai Accent (snow tires) the last 8yrs, never had to chain up.
405-14-395 over the 15 to 395 is my preferred route.
