Errr. Okay. This isn't a resort like Whistler. Although we do have some high-speed quads.
Sib

For me, any place that has a lift is a "resort".

Never really got into the "destination" thing. ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I love lifts. But the fixed grips give a much better chance at conversation. Sometime we should share a ride up!

Impressive. A man after my same goal.

I'm missing one continent, Africa. That one will likely be checked off on a WROD in southern Africa as that is high season for safaris and would not detract from our winter. In the near term, most new additions to the above list of 212 areas will probably be in the Alps.

Try a hut trip in Morocco. I got this close to being able to ski there following a two week trip in Europe. If I'd thought about it I'd have arranged for a ski tour here. As it was, I met my GF in Madrid and we took a bohemian vacation by train and ferry to Marrakech. Lots of fun.

It is also my goal to ski all continents. I only have three and unless I encounter a generous benefactor don't expect to get Antarctica. The others missing are Asia, Africa and Australia. Huh. The four I have left all start with A. How auspicious. Or not.

I'm really thankful I've gotten where I have been already, including but not especially yesterday at Breck. :)

Oops. I meant to attach these...

The skiing is up there somewhere...

Very light on US destinations. I see you’re planning to remedy that soon. While you’re heading to Aspen why not check out Sunlight just near Glenwood?

Sunlight is a real gem, no crowds, low cost and when I was there the snow was just as good as Aspen.

That sure is an intriguing bucket list...mainly because I see a few of my least favorites on there while noticing that you haven't been to some of my favorites. (CAVEAT: when I say "least favorites", please know I still LOVE to ski at those places, there are just so many other places I would prefer to ski.)

I note from Choucas' list that I have a long way to go in the Alps. Liz and I are starting to work on that.

Europeans have a different ways on how they call a “ski resort”...

For example, Davos and Kloster are linked by lift. And Marmolada,Corvara,Arabba,Laguzoi are all part of what makes up the famous Sella Rhonda area. Corvatsch,Diavolezza/Lagalb are all in the St Moritz area. Though the last two (actually 3 depends on how you count) are not fully linked by lift. Still, they are linked by train and are on a area-wide combined ticket.

Yes it's less cut and dried in Europe to say what's a discrete area. Davos/Klosters is a case like Chamonix where the areas are not lift connected so easier to say separate: Parsenn, Jakobshorn, Madrisa, Pischa, Rinerhorn. How is that any different from Ajax/Highlands/Buttermilk/Snowmass being separate? There are also cases where two formerly separate areas are connected by lift but not by piste (Les Arcs and La Plagne, Kitzbuhel and Pass Thurn). I'm inclined to call those separate too. Sugarbush is a good American analogy. The hard cases are the ones like Sella Ronda. I'd have to see it in person to say whether there are clear cut geographic boundaries.

Yeah, gets a little fuzzy as to what's an area in Europe. You could just say Dolomite Superski (all lifts are covered by the same pass) or you could break it out by valley. I kind of split the difference. I didn't mention skiing the Val di Fassa lifts (also on the Dolomite pass) which connect into the Sella Ronda at Alba and links all the way to Pozza di Fassa. This lift system alone would swallow most North American ski areas with room to spare. Laguzoi and Cinque Torre are a few lift rides and bus ride away from the Sella Ronda, so that's a separate area in my book.
In St. Moritz, the Engadine lift pass covers all of the areas linked by bus and train in the valley, but it's quite possible to ski there for a week and, for a variety of reasons, not even go to some of the areas. The Arlberg pass covers Warth, Lech, Zurs, Stuben, St Christoph and St Anton. Is that one area or 6? Same with all lot of places, Klosters/Davos, Zermatt/Cervina, Champoluc/Gressoney/Alagna, Chamonix/Courmayeur, Paradise Ski, Espace Killy, and so on. All I know is that there's a lot of fun skiing to be had wherever you go no matter how you label it.

I tend to go with obvious geographic boundaries so count the Arlberg as 4: St. Anton (contains St. Christoph), Lech/Zurs, Stuben, Warth. Someone told me there are 7 distinct lift owners in the Arlberg. The RFID's count each time a lift is used so revenue is divided by the actual use of lifts owned by each company. Zurs reputedly spent $50 million on that gondola link to Alpe Rauz.

But I agree it is far from cut and dried how to count areas in the Alps. This is a problem I hope to have frequently in upcoming seasons!

Simple.one of 2 ways to do that:

Start by counting only the big ski "domain", such as the Sella Ronda. 3-Valleys.

As you go back to the area you like that you've been before, you start counting the individual villages.

Or you can reverse the process:

Start by counting all the little villages in one ski "domain" to make an impressive list.

As that lists get too long and too unwieldy, collapse them into big ski domains to keep it manageable.

There is the question as to what construes a ‘resort’:
Does it have to have base area lodging? If yes, that excludes some pretty cool local areas that might have awesome skiing. If no, that includes some pretty awefull areas like Hyland. Park, MN.

Is there a minimum size? If so, does only groomed count? (.. sorry La Grave) if no, does an indoor slope count?

And what counts as ‘having skied’? I once bought a ticket, rode the lift up, bumped down grass clumps all the way to the base and sold my ticket to someone in the parking lot.

Then there is the fact, that resorts I went to a long time ago, when I was was only skiing easy groomers, would feel completely different if I went there now.

Anyway, here is my list:

Been there:

Austria:
Stubai Glacier in pre-season, first time on snow, snowboard
Kitzsteinhorn-Kaprun, mid season, but glacier only due to horribly warm weather, only 1 day.

France:
St Martin Belleville ( Trois Vallees) snowboarding
Les Deux Alps. Snowboarding. Drought conditions, but very cold. Crazy busy on the WROD, Lift tickets were divided into morning and afternoon users to ease congestion

Colorado:
Copper, skiing, beginner level
Steamboat, skiing low intermediate skiing
Winter Park, skiing, intermediate-advanced

MN
Lutsen, skiing.

I’ll skip the small hills in MN, WI and MI

Bucket List:
Steamboat and Copper, with better skills and skis, planned this winter
Mt Bohemia, MI, hopefully finally this winter
Mt. Bacheror, OR maybe this spring
Grand Targhee, WY
Alta/Snowbird, UT
Cat skiing interior BC
Alps, resort to be determined. This time with good conditions, and better skills.

The thread is titled 'ski areas', not 'resorts' skied so far. In that light, any developed place to ski qualifies in my book.
