Saw this guy (it was small, so I'm assuming it was male - male eagles are smaller than females) next to the parking lot at the shopping mall in Nelson, British Columbia on March 20. He was fishing in the Kootenay River, which is right next to the mall parking lot. Most of the shops were closed (COVID-19), so he had to fish instead. :ogcool:

And now for something completely different...saw this on a car windshield in Puerto Morelos on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula near the end of October.

That is a grasshopper. A 7" (17cm) grasshopper. Or locust, if you prefer. A macro lens was not required. The hand in the background is for scale. The owner of the hand didn't want to get any closer.

In any case, you don't a want a bunch of these anywhere near your garden.

Mourning cloak butterfly. I saw one farther north too; they must overwinter.

Today was Wild Kingdom in the suburbs.

My plan for the day was to create the 2nd bed for flowers in my side yard. A few minutes into that work, I noticed my neighbor's 2 young cats had a kitten friend. Then, oh, no ... it's not a kitten. It's a baby rabbit. I tried to distract the cats and save the rabbit's life, but they ran off with their prey. The cats' owner wants to discourage this behavior, so I texted her and went back to my project. About 10 minutes later, the owner walks out the door with a bag in her hand -- and a story:

The cats took the baby rabbit into the back yard whereupon the dog (retriever type, maybe has a soft mouth) took possession of the rabbit and went into the house. Chaos ensued ... with 4 people, including a teenage neighbor, trying to stop the dog and rescue the rabbit. The dog flew up the stairs, into the master bedroom, and deposited the still breathing rabbit in the middle of the bed.

The bag in the neighbor's hand contained the stunned, perhaps injured baby rabbit. (Ah, a gift.) I took it and put the rabbit in a crate to rest in the shade and then later released it in the grassy area at a school nearby.

After a break, I stepped out my door to resume my project. And another neighbor yelled that I had a "critter". You know where this is headed, right? I mean, NObody yells to warn you that there's a fluffy kitten in your yard.

The critter ...

And the other end ...

That is a bull snake that was chased out of my other next door neighbor's garage. It sought refuge by the tree that is 2 feet away from the flower bed I was working on.

I didn't get to see the snake. Yay? Report was that it is about 4 feet long and 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Hopefully, it was just passing through the neighborhood. If not, there is a local guy who is licensed/certified/whatever in removal and relocation.

We had a juvenile bull snake stuck in our back yard a few years back. Poor thing couldn't get up the stucco wall. Tried. Fell down. Tried again. They look a lot like a rattlesnake with a fake rattle at the end, so I called the critter fixers and they rescued the poor thing.

We have bird feeders set up next to the patio. Shelter-in-place gives me a little time to watch them.

This is a male Evening Grosbeak.

This is a male Calliope Hummingbird. According the Audubon web site, it is the smallest bird native to North America. I was glad to be able to catch it with the tail feathers spread.

I think this is a male Cassin's Finch, but I could be wrong.

We were sitting on the deck having BBQ last night and talking about how with all the bear activity in our neighborhood we hadn't seen one yet. 5 minutes later I looked over the railing into the back yard and spotted this big boy. We let him hang out while we took pictures and then the firecrackers came out. Probably about 350lb male. The pictures don't show scale very well.

These were taken while paddling on a small lake just north of the Canadian border at the beginning of June. We cannot cross into the US right now, and we might not be allowed to do so for some time to come.

There are actually three ducklings. One is behind mama. You can just see the top of its head.
