Perhaps I missed it, but where do you normally ski?
A rolling carpet off the coast of Rhode Island. The ship moves around a lot. There's gambling.

These 85mm, 161cm park skis would look great on the Casino belt.

Anywhere north of NJ/PA. I go all the way to Jay or even Canada.

That’s for skiing. (Hence trees)

For demo, I’d probably be doing it at my “frequent” area, which is southern VT. I haven’t bought my pass for next season yet. So it could be Okemo or Stratton or Killington.

Huh? This has been a long shit show of a thread and I don't have the energy to read through it again to find all your posts. I don't understand why you're obsessed with hard snow performance if you ski Jay with any frequency (or Okemo to be honest).

Why do you think he does? He's saying that narrower skis appropriate to his size tend to BE for hard snow.

No, I don’t want a pure carving knife. No, I’m not an aspiring intermediate groomer-zoomer, I can ski all over the mountain in any ski. I just prefer a narrower (or right-sized) all-rounder for the dense chowder of the east for a petite fitness skier.

It took less than a page for the definition of “narrow” to creep all the way up to 90mm!:roflmao:

For me narrow is less than about 80mm wide.

If you look hard you can find narrowish soft snow oriented skis. They are not common but are there.

An example is the DPS Wailer 99. To me it is an awesome ski for deep snow for small and light skiers who really dont need or want a 110mm+ wide ski, so its not a narrow ski but it is a design you often find in MUCH wider skis.

The Stockli Laser AX (78mm wide) is a great narrow softish snow oriented ski and its available in smaller lengths (154cm, 161cm).

The Liberty V80w (https://libertyskis.com/collections/womens/products/2019-variant-80-w) also looks like a soft snow capable "narrow" ski.

Anyone care to guess what width of skis Seb Michel is bouncing around on in this soft stuff?

Skinnier than your 88mm boats. Likely under 75. Probably a slalom ski. He won't stop moving dammit.

Are you saying the op should man up? It's taken like 10pgs to get there.

So, Quebec has no trees either?

Thank you all very much for the late addition of the several candidate skis!

It appears many others do understand!

You also have the option to stay away a thread you don’t understand. Or not to post (something like 15 posts) in a thread you “don’t have the energy to read through”. :D

Last but not least, let’s take Jay as an example of why ANYONE wants hard snow performance in their 1 ski quiver. I haven’t skied Jay too often. But the groomer of Jay seems permanently wind scoured and icy, save for the few hours post storm. One do need to use the groomer to get to the trees. Not to mention the days when the glades are frozen. So even for a Jay regular, I bet hard snow performance will be handy!

To be honest I think I forget which posts were you versus other people. I did read all 15 pages at least once. I do recall some debate over the existence of natural snow in Vermont, whether there was an internationally recognized border between the warring states of Northern and Souther Vermont and what precisely the definition of “is” is.

I am the opposite end of the size spectrum so I may not quite grasp the problem (I would also self describe as a “strong” skier, not a finesse skier), however my shorter, lighter friends have not felt compelled to ski things that are dramatically narrower than I do most of the time. I could certainly believe I get a lot more mileage than the you would out of wider skis. However, I categorically disagree one generically needs 80 underfoot skis for Northern VT (and, in fact, a friend about your size wants bigger, heavier skis than her Black Pearls for skiing crud). I originally mentioned that directional twins do exist and are, I think, good choices. I stand by that unless you are going to Sunday River’s groomed trees and geometrically improbable skis.

It’s not a matter of necessity. It’s a matter of preference.

since you’ve read the 15 pages once, must have some vague recollection of some advantages of narrower skis: quicker edge to edge, less knee stress...

That’s a point that seems to keep getting lost every 2 new pages (along with the 80mm definition of “narrow”)

Has the Liberty V76 been mentioned?
That could be your ticket. Nice flex for the softer stuff bit can carve too.

But, the flames on that Sollie park ski are fine.
Yep, it’s on the list.

(When a ski is mentioned, I also take a look at its siblings within the 75-85 range. So yes, the Liberty line had been mentioned)

he V76 is a "Come Play With Me"* offering in the mid-70s recreational carver segment. Yin to the yang of the Atomic X9 WB’s burly scowl, the 76 still has excellent grip and stability, but wants to explore all over the mountain, whether it has been groomed or not. With a 14m radius at 172cm, it does everything quickly, but is still smooth and collected, eager without being psychotic. Off piste, it exudes confidence, and it feels … happy. It’s one of those skis where you get to the bottom and think, “Huh, that went by fast,” and only then do you realize your inner kid had taken over and (without bothering to let you know) grabbed your hand, dragging you down the hill at a much faster, much more instinctual level.

Yep, it’s on the list.

At this point with 280 posts, I am not sure there is a ski that hasn't been mentioned. ;) But the VMT76 should be on the short list.
