On cougar attacks and how to avoid them (and all sorts of other animals) is a book called “Don’t get eaten”. While the book is dedicated towards the western region it’s advice applies to all.

For those that feel they are only at risk in the west based on the article be advised that cougar has returned to SW and Central Ontario.

BTW the biggest difference between bear and cougar, if you see it (1/2 to 3/4 mile away) it is coming to investigate you, bear not so much so. The second item is they seem to be more stealthy. Leave the area and keep an eye out as they are relatively fast moving.

As with anything the biggest defense is in how to avoid putting yourself in an unexpected attack risk position. The rest is a good agressive offense when attacked.
