In 1938 a figure skater, Jimmy Madden, wanted to rent some skis. He had injured his foot skating the day before, so he rented some youth sized skis so he wouldn't put too much stress on his foot. He soon discovered that he could do most anything on those shorter skis that he could do on skates, but the tails kept digging in on backward moves. Later he had someone build him a pair of short skis with twin tips, so he could practice what he called "figure-skiing". They came to be known as "goon skis". It is said that Suzy Chaffee learned ski ballet as a young girl using some old goon skis.
