To avoid hitting the gates, it would be helpful to have a narrower stance and to start the turn higher. And, pressure should be directed to the outside ski. Stopping the video at 0:21 clearly shows an over-reliance on a tipped inside ski.

I do like the porcupine strategy, to keep the snowboarders at bay.
