China is changing when it comes to viewing the Olympics apparently. Not officially though. There was a bbc radio bit about it today but I can't find it. There's less concern about winning as a national power thing and more of a celebrating athletes.

This Chinese swimmer has millions of followers now after interviews like this. Fans met her at the airport when she returned. This was only after the semi final heat. She won bronze in the final but had to be told by a reporter she'd won.

Looks like Brazil men's soccer has won convincingly over Honduras. This is good as the women's soccer loss to the Swedes and volleyball loss to China was rough.

Talk about crowds. The Brazil-China womens match was amazing.

Home field advantage with regard to fans in the stands is even greater this time due to many staying away due to zika fears.

The Ryan Lochte and other US swimmers incident is getting weird. He claimed at first their taxi was pulled over by guys with badges and they were robbed at gunpoint. A gun put to his forehead and cocked. Now the story is they were at a gas station using the bathroom and the cabbie wouldn't go, then guys came over. No gun to the forehead.

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/20...-u-s-swimmers-pulled-plane-rio-lawyer-n633241

"Mr. Lochte told NBC’s “Today” show that men had drawn guns and that one of them had taken his money and wallet, but left his cellphone and credentials.

He also told USA Today that the swimmers did not initially tell the United States Olympic Committee about what had happened “because we were afraid we’d get into trouble.”

Mr. Lochte and Mr. Feigen told Brazilian investigators that they left the party at Club France, which was set up to promote the country during the Games, around 4 a.m. Sunday, according to local news reports.

But video cameras showed the swimmers leaving the club at 5:50 a.m., about an hour before they arrived at the Olympic Village at 6:56 a.m., according to Extra, a Rio newspaper.

There are other points of confusion in the accounts by Mr. Lochte and Mr. Feigen, the only swimmers who provided testimony to Brazilian investigators.

The men, who said they had been intoxicated upon leaving the party, said they could not remember the color of the taxi they took, or where exactly the assault had taken place. Investigators have been unable to find the taxi driver who delivered the swimmers back to the village."

Story seems to be evolving to "drunk college age kids lost all their money while out partying at 3am" way beyond the safety of Olympic Village.

It gets weirder now. Allegedly there's video at the gas station showing them fighting and breaking down bathroom door. Video has not been released.

http://www.ibtimes.com/ryan-lochte-...wimmer-fighting-breaking-down-rio-gas-2403576

Just amazing. He goes on national tv like two hours after getting back to the village and describes this "robbery". Why just not mention it? Or skip the interview?
Nbc alluded to Lochte not being the brightest bulb in the chandelier. But in a context of he wouldn't be able to make this up. There's a reason Matt Lauer is not a detective.

Lochte's lawyer is also an idiot, making a statement about how "there's a dark cloud over Rio.." Pissing off all of Brazil is not going to make this go away. It's just fuel for the British tabloids also who are all over this. They've got sports star with a model girl friend possibly out looking for hookers on Copacabana not the girl from Ipanema. (The original one Nbc located in an unrelated "incredible" story according to Bob "Stats" Costa.)

Police have located the taxi driver and demand access to swimmers' Uber accounts.

Funny that Lochte was the only swimmer involved in the incident who was back in the US, and now his buddies got nabbed at the airport.

Lochte is not a kid. I have no clue who his agent or advisors are, but they must be in overdrive on damage control. Based on how this episode is unfolding, he doesn't look too bright. And we won't get into his judgement. Starting with his story and the subsequent Billy Bush interview. Bush, incidentally has come out and said that he doesn't think Lochte is smart enough to weave this story together. Not so flattering. Interesting. Maybe he couldn't weave together a story that would stand up?

The guy had the ability to milk his olympic swimming for a LONG TIME. Heck it might be his only "skill set", and it might have taken care of him for life with the right endorsements, some celebrity status, etc.
This could have some big consequences. His legacy now might be as a punch line to some bad jokes. The gig of being a role model, somebody for younger athletes to look up to might be a challenge. Speaking opportunities? Questionable.
Why would this idiot fabricate this story? I don't get it.
With today's technology, and cameras literally everywhere, it's not that easy to be so "inventive."

We'll see how it all unfolds. Doesn't look good right now. Sad.

His hair was white until the green water hit it. Lochte has been the butt of jokes for sounding very dumb in interviews for years now.

Guess I missed something.

Murray beats Del Potro in a good match over 4 hrs. The Scotsman returns just about everything. Maybe a razor company would sponsor Murray to shave. Would it be better?

Track- A world record set in the 400m in 1999 by Michael Johnson is broken.

Usain Bolt does it again. Amazing.

Mo Farrah of GB falls in the 10,000m and wins gold.

Three great track performances. I went away over the weekend to the WV mtns to escape the heat in Wash DC and missed all of them. Van Niekerk's WR in the 400M run is going to be hard to top in the Track events in this Games. The way he did it running blind from the outside lane is the stuff of Olympic legend. Bolt and Farah are already in the legendary category!

Yeah, he was already known as a bit of a dim bulb. This just ... well, I'll wait and see.

Does anyone remember Ruthless People? Do you remember Bill Paxton's character? Does it remind anyone of Ryan Lochte? And maybe in intelligence?

So doods stop at a gas station to piss, door is locked, so instead of doing what any NORMAL 32 year old frat boy would do, piss behind the building, they break the door down. Store guy confronts them, security guard is there, they agree to pay some cash to fix the door, book it and make up some nonsense. It's like a Leave it to Beaver story and Lochte is Eddie Haskell.."just roll down the broken window Wally!!" Yeesh..

Oh my, I just rewatched the video where the US runner fell in the 5000 m race and tore her ACL etc -- that knee definitely went the wrong way. <shudder>

It's unfortunate, but this is Lochte's legacy now. The story is big for now. Sports radio that spent little to no time on Olympics are talking about it.

This from the Daily Mail. Catch line is "The only truth they told was they were drunk."

"US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have told police that they fabricated claims that they and their Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte were robbed at a gas station on Sunday.

The sudden admission came as video was released in which the men can be seen running to and from the bathroom at the establishment, spending over 10 minutes at the gas station a little after 6am in the morning.

Sources have confirmed to DailyMail.com that Lochte and the group destroyed a door at the gas station and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard demanded they hand over money.

The gas station where the incident occurred is not the same one that Loochte initially told authorities he had been at on Sunday."

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...claims-brazen-Lochte-laughs-social-media.html

Nbc after a press conference:

The four American swimmers who have claimed they were victims of an armed robbery in Rio were the ones causing trouble that night and fabricated their account of the incident, the chief of civil police said Thursday.

"Right now, as we speak, what the police can affirm — there was no robbery the way it was reported or claimed by the athletes," said Chief Fernando Veloso, speaking in Portuguese at a press conference Thursday. "They were not victims of the criminal actions that they claimed they were."

Surveillance video plus witness accounts confirmed the swimmers, including 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, damaged a bathroom door at a gas station in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood before they returned to the athletes' village early Sunday, Veloso said.
...
Veloso would not say whether any charges would be filed against the swimmers. He said the Americans paid $20 U.S. dollars plus 100 Brazilian reals for the damage to the gas station.

"We need to understand what each athlete did in order to understand what the crime was, if there was a crime," he added.

It was not clear whether one of the swimmers was involved in an altercation with a security guard at the gas station, as some news outlets reported on Thursday. But Veloso said it was clear the athletes weren't victim to any crime.

"Their claim that they were a victim of an assault or a robbery or any kind of violence is not true," he said.

Veloso described Lochte as "very angry" and "intoxicated" after the incident.

It goes back to "nothing good happens between mignight and 6 AM. When something is reported "...early Sunday Morning" you can be guaranteed it didn't happen on the way to the 8AM sermon. They cost themselves every possible endorsement opportunity..ever.
