People complain about the lack of oomf on the 4 cylinder Outback ... the Outback has been a 2.5L, Ascent a 2.4L for a bigger vehicle. What am I missing?

Are the 2.5 and 2.4 the same engine? Displacement isn't everything. There are plenty of 4-bangers out there that have more torque and horses than my old v6.

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering.

That first one is a big "if." My 6 cylinder Outback does fine, but my old 4 cylinder turbo had more pickup. People complain about the lack of oomf on the 4 cylinder Outback ... the Outback has been a 2.5L, Ascent a 2.4L for a bigger vehicle. What am I missing?

The current 2.5L in the Outback doesn't have a Turbo, the 2.4 in the Ascent is a Turbo.

It's my understanding that turbo engines lose less power at altitude than their naturally-aspirated counterparts, as the turbo can adjust to compensate for the lower air pressures that cause most of the power loss.

This is 100% true, although I believe it's sort of a happy side effect rather than adjustment. It can crunch the air molecules tighter.

A head to head review with the Atlas. It's close with both having some advantages. But if you really want a usable 3rd row, the Atlas comes out ahead.

Jeez how big are the article writers? I'm 6'1 and can sit behind myself in all three rows in Ascent for maybe up to 2 hour trip, and they have their knees up to their throat? That said I think CX9 is roomier as far as combined leg room goes, dunno about others.

The more I read the more I think the writers are full of it, complaining about non-linear response of Ascent engine. Well that's how all turbo engine works, especially if you drive them like an NA engine.

CX-9 has the least amount of leg room in the 3rd row of all of them. Said to be the best handling SUV, though I haven't driven one. And have you sat in the 3rd row of an Atlas?

Hmm, it felt at least the same as Ascent or perhaps a bit roomier, granted there was quite a bit of time between sitting in them so my memory could be foggy. Never tried an Atlas.

From what I've read/hear Mazdas have good handling feel, but when it comes down to numbers they aren't the best.

I recently sat in the 2nd and 3rd rows of the Atlas. I set the drivers seat for me and had plenty of room in the second row (6'2") behind the drivers seat. I also sat in the third row and once again there was plenty of room for me. VW did a good job giving every row plenty of room.

I test drove an Ascent last week and came away with a better impression than I had expected.

Me: 60 yrs old, 5'4", 160 lbs.
Presently driving: 2003 Toyota Highlander 4WD, 3.0L,268K miles, all but the first 3 miles under my ownership; 1998 Ford Escort ZX2, 2.0L, 230K miles, bought used in 2002 for my sons, still running despite their worst efforts
Aspirations: retire next year, make my way west, add a small-ish camper to the lineup
Looking for: vehicle for the next 15-20 years, minimum 5000 lb towing (want a comfortable margin), no serious off-road, SUV (not a truck kinda guy); basically, Goldilocks in size, ride, performance, reliability, price
Preconception: Ain't no replacement for displacement!

Vehicles that fit the big enough to tow, not too big to feel cavernous are in the mid-size SUV category and most of them are 3 row (the Grand Cherokee being a 2 row exception). So far, I’ve driven a half dozen.

Back to the Ascent. I got to the dealership about 40 minutes from closing (their fault for an 8pm lights out on a Friday). After the general chit chat and info gathering, I got into a Premium (2nd lowest out of 4) trim level. Instead of spending time checking out all the interior features and back seat feel, I got right to the drive, which the salesman wanted kept short. The short of it: sitting in the driver’s seat, size felt good; acceleration was good, turbo kick-in delay minimal; handling was good, road noise was a bit more noticeable than for other vehicles I’ve tried, the fake gear shift feel added in was also noticeable but not annoying. Getting back to the dealership, the manager was to locking things up, so no post-drive sales pitch (YES!!!!).

Definitely going to go back for a longer look.

Also need to resolve the displacement dilemma. Yes, this has a turbo. I’ve looked at several towing videos, but it’s difficult to overcome decades of “size matters.” I keep seeing the “broad flat torque curve” description, but a google search has not turned up any real plots. I can make lots of things look flat with a coarse enough scale. Has anybody seen data? If it does indeed have 277 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm, that bodes well. I’ll have to ask when I go back to the dealership.

The Ford Explorer curve comes out to only 210 ft-lb @ 2000 rpm.

Also also need to consider another general guideline about not buying the first year of a vehicle.

Does anybody on here own an Ascent? Or know someone who does? I didn’t see any in this thread.

They were proactive and doing the right thing...new vehicles for all involved.

Yup, and it's not buy back all the TDI's money, but 300 ish cars at $35k +/- is still a lot of money. Though I suppose it's a write-off of some sort.

Passed by VW dealer to sit in an Atlas, holy hell this thing is huge, bigger than some of the minivans I've been in. Not sure if I want to drive a landboat this size unless I had to carry 7 adults.

Good to hear, in a few years I may have to switch to something bigger, Atlas is definitely on my list.

http://www.thedrive.com/news/18562/meet-subarus-new-fa24-boxer-engine

The Outback 2.5 engine code is FB25, whereas the Ascent has a FA24. The WRX has a FA20, so there is more in common with the WRX engine than the Outback engine. So no, they are not the same engine.

Yep, the Ascent engine is essentially a bored version of FA20. Interesting enough the FA20 turbo came out in Japan in 2012 and made nearly 300 HP/tq there but was neutered for North America market. It was actually used in Forester in 2013 then WRX a year later, so all the hotshot WRX drivers are going around with an SUV engine under their hood. :D
