Going to be interesting to see what the forensic engineers find. There are so many possibilities. You need to look at things on site to fully determine the cause of such a failure. Glad there was no one on or near it when it failed. It could have been horrid.

This has to be sabotage as there is no way that a gondola cable suddenly snaps at 4 am.

I don't even know how you would sabotage that if you wanted to.

The cable can be easily cut with a line saw equipped with the proper type of cutting disc.

It seems like in both cases that would be extremely dangerous to the person doing the cutting!

Might this possibly be the work of some environmentalist group?

For someone wacko enough to cut that cable. I would say rationality would probably not be one of their valued qualities.

Note to self: remove gondola cars at night so they don't fall.

This is why bridges now cover the bottom 10-15 ft of support cable at the roadway level.

They used to have a section of the main suspension cable of the Verranzano Bridge at that little park right before the bridge in Brooklyn. As I recall, they were parallel strands on the inside, not twisted. At some point maybe they got nervous about advertising the structure and removed it.

A close inspection (micro) of the cable break should provide the cause. Speculation, I find it odd the failure was during non operating hours.
