Saw the Allman Brothers Band perform in 1975. Even then we were lamenting too bad Duane wasn't around. Never saw them again, but have seen two of the latter day ABB members Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks perform separately. Gregg was lucky to connect with these guys and enjoy a band renaissance in the 2000s. For a southern, male, baby-boomer the ABB was about as good as it gets.

PS: IIRC, Cher spoke at Sonny Bono's funeral and referred to him as her "most unforgettable character". I wouldn't exactly call that a warm term of endearment for a spouse:wag:

Saw him at a little bar in Hackettstown NJ, The Nook. We are at a time when all of our music idols will be moving on, it doesn't make it aany easier. Duane and Greg are reunited. Favorite Allman Brothers Song: Statesboro Blues.

Good reason for all you freestylers and ballet skiers to get checked for Hep C.

My cousin died from that, surgery related blood transfusion in the 70s caused it He died in the late 90s from it.

Good news, if you test + the new treatment which can cure some only costs $60,000 per month.

Can't recall if it was the spring of '76, '77 or '78 when Dickey Betts did a free outdoor concert at Memorial Hall in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park. I think Greg was there because all my friends said it was most of the Allman Brothers Band, again I can't recall with certainty. I do remember that the Pagans were there wearing their colors with their Harly-Davidson choppers to the far left of the stage diagonally lined up from the front row all the way to the back of the large crowd of concert goers. A scene that made FX's Sons Of Anarchy look like a little group of doctor, lawyer, banker weekend warriors! Thankfully it was peaceful there, everyone thoroughly into the classic Allman Brothers music Dicky Betts and his band played.

Two years ago I saw Warren Haynes XPN Free At Noon performance, he played for an hour and fifteen minutes which is long for a free at noon show. Didn't do much Allman Brothers material but still a good show.
Free At Noon is fun, depending on performer the intimate but nice venue's crowd varies from U-Penn and Drexel students to their professor's, hipsters and everything in between. If any here find yourselves in Philly on a Friday it's well worth checking the XPN website and signing up to attend. The World Cafe (venue) WXPN studio, is fairly close to 30th Street Station, easy to get to and from.

I can hear Pierre Robert and his smooth voice giving his euology this week.

I heard a cool story recently involving the Allman Brothers. The owner of a studio where a lot of their material was recorded and produced (live stuff) was getting set up to house some jams involving one of Greg's kid. I don't recall which one. Anyway, the studio owner wanted to procure a better drum kit for the event and asked this drummer who posts on a facebook page I follow to go on the quest to find suitable drums for the Allman legacy to play. Drummer was given a fairly tight budget so going to the music store and purchasing the latest and greatest wasn't an option. A short search of Craigslist and local music papers lead to someone who said they had the brand and kit size somewhere in storage, but hadn't ever actually opened the cases to take a closer look. They all arrived at the storage location and when they pulled out the cases and opened them they found beautiful white Pearl drums... with Allman Brothers tour crew backstage passes stuck on the shells! It looks like they actually found the same drums one of the two drummers used on their tours during the 1990s. I guess that was just meant to be.. Neither the owner of the stuff in the storage locker nor anyone else had any idea that the drums were previously owned by the Allman drummer, but they ended up back in possession of the studio owner and will soon be used by a project, collaboration of people, one of whom, the drummer, is the son of Greg.

RIP Gregg Allman. I was fortunate enough to have seen ABB thrice, 1980, '94, and a Vegas House of Blues show that I can't quite misremember from the latter part of the century. One of my all time favorite bands.

RIP Gregg Allman - I am at a loss for words. I was moved by Gregg’s voice when I first heard the Allman Brothers Band in 1969. I was nine years old. I had not even picked up a guitar yet but thanks to my to older brothers I had been exposed to a lot of great soul music with the best singers in the world. But this was something different. This music was making a deep emotional connection with me even though it was too complex for me to really understand. Somehow, though, it had this "common man” quality that allowed that music to connect with people on so many different levels without analyzing the ingredients that went into it-soul, blues, rock, country, jazz-all mixed together in a way no one had ever done before. And on top of it all was this beautiful voice that could be soothing, terrifying, mellow, angry, and amazingly natural and soulful all at the same time-and instantly captivating. It drew me in. It drew us all in.

Over the next few years I would begin to play guitar as everyone of my music loving friends became Allman Brothers’ freaks. That music spoke to anyone who heard it but in the South it resonated with us. It spoke volumes. It brought a voice to people like myself in the midst of some confusing, ever-changing times. Here was this group of Southern hippies with an integrated band coming out of the Deepest South with equally deep music on the heels of some extremely deep changes. We didn’t realize how heavy that was at the time but we sure realized how heavy the music was. Every guitar player in every Southern town was listening to the Live at Fillmore East record and worshipping at the altar of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. But the icing on the cake was always Gregg’s voice. That’s what separated the ABB from being a band that only connected with music freaks. Women whom previously had only listened to the radio would tolerate the long jams to get to the parts where Gregg melted their souls with that angelic voice. It turned casual music fans into fanatical fans who were discovering a new multi-dimensional music that a few years prior wasn’t even in existence. And it was all due to Gregg’s voice-and the songs.

He wrote these amazing songs that were as natural as his voice was. The words and melodies felt so perfectly unpretentious and, when delivered by him, made an emotional connection that only happens when music is genuine and honest. I learned an enormous amount about singing and songwriting from him-most of it before we ever met.

I am truly honored to have been fortunate enough to have written many songs with him and equally honored to have traveled the world with him while making the best music the world has ever known. I will never, ever take that for granted. And on top of all that-he was my dear friend.
My fondest memories will always be of Gregg, myself, and Allen Woody sharing a tour bus together-listening to great music and laughing our asses off mile after mile. Traveling- like life- is so much better when you’ve got friends to share the experience with. I’ve lost too many lately and this one is gonna be hard to get past. There is some comfort in knowing that millions of people all over the world feel the same way.

I love you Gregory - WH

^^^ @neonorchid - thanks for posting this.

Many a night at merriweather and the beacon, great times. We are firing up the BBQ this memorial weekend and going to CRANK up some ABB.

* this probably belongs in the memorable season quotes but more appropriate here.......

" The closest one gets to immortality, is the legacy they leave behind " RIP Gregg.

Almost Famous

Is Stillwater a real band?
Stillwater is a composite of bands and musicians who Cameron Crowe met whilst working at Rolling Stone. It is said to be likely that guitarist Russell Hammond is based on Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers, who Crowe went on tour with in 1973.

In 1972, I think it was, I drove with some friends in my camperized Econoline van from Toronto to Watkins Glen N.Y for the one day Allman Brothers, The Band, Greatful Dead concert. There was free camping so we came a day early. The Allman Brothers came on the stage the night before the concert to do an equipment check...and they played for 2 hours.

The next day starting a noon, the Dead did their standard 5 hour concert, followed by The Band, interrupted by the standard rock concert rain storm, then the Allman Brothers, then a jam by all 3 bands going on to well past 2am.

Obviously one of the top concerts that I have ever been to and it kinda made up for a few years earlier when I turned down an invite from a fraternity brother to go to a concert via VW bus to some place called Woodstock.

@Philpug and I had the rare opportunity to see some of the greats at the Sonoma Music Festival in 2015.
Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald
Gregg Allman
Edgar Winter Band
It was a really great opportunity to rock out with some legends!

This is a tough loss. I can't play music and I don't go to too many concerts but I always have music playing and it truly moves me. Allman Brothers are one of my favorites. Their music will live forever.
