Windsurfing in Hattaras we encountered Water Moccasins, when we got home looked them up, sidewinder/moccasins are similar and refer to each other, with the moccasin being the more dangerous of the two. (Exact reason don't know).

IMHO the difference is that snakes are land creatures and moccasins are forced to live in water so have serious attitude therefore more willing to bite you because, well just because I'm wet and I don't like it attitude.;)

Very few poisonous snakes at 13,050'.
Just sayin''.
Also very few pheasants. :(
Our back yard is high desert, at 5,600 ft.
We've been warned many times about rattlers, but we have yet to see one.
