good morning, just signed up for this site. I feel down the stairs in late June and ruptured my quad. I am now in week 13/14 and I can only bend to about 85. should I be really concerned about this, or dose it just take more time. in PT they have their protocol which says I should be at 130 degrees. the other day in PT they just bent my leg and it hurts like crazy. my issue with were I go to PT is it's never the same session. one physical therapist can be really aggressive and other not. I do go to the pool each day, it's heated and I get a nice workout. I find that to be better sometimes than PT. Any thoughts

Bruce,

First welcome to the club that nobody ever wanted to join. This is a very difficult injury but, you can and will recover. I was fortunate to get the ROM back quickly. Not sure what they have you doing for home exercises but, what helped me was heel slides, also sitting on a Swiss ball and rocking the knee slowly forward and back. Make sure you hold for a few seconds each rep. Did that two-three times a day. Also if you can buy a stem unit. You can buy one on Amazon for under $40. Ice and stem twice a day really helps get that swelling out which causes stiffness. Good to hear your using a pool. Other than that stick with your rehab.. I’m also at week 13 and it’s a slow but steady climb. Keep your head up.

Courtney,

Awesome job you sound like you are doing really well. Gives me more hope down the road. Every week I’m noticing more progress. I’m getting strength and stability back. At 13 almost 14 weeks I’m really happy where I am and wouldn’t have thought I would be here two months ago. There is still much work to be done but, taking it day by day week by week is key. So thankful for this site and all the posts. It really gave me hope which is what everyone needs dealing with this injury. Keep up the good work Courtney!

Good to hear from you JFry !!!
Looks like you're doing fantastic !! In fact you're ahead of where I was at 14 weeks !! In fact way ahead !!! Bravo !! This injury is really damn frustrating, slow rehabbing and maddening !! I remember being quite discouraged at 14 weeks, but it progress really began to pick up for me at 17-18 weeks. Looks like you'll be far past where I was then.
I'm quite impressed ! Hope all else is going well (aside from the QTR) in your life. Thanks again for your encouragement and your post !

Hope everyone is doing well. I’m at 17 weeks now and have seen slow but steady improvement. I’m still not where I want to be as far as waking down stairs or a hill. From time to time my knee will give out. Hard to believe I have come this far. Stay strong everyone.

Going down Stairs is still hard for me too !!!

Almost natural for me to go down them !!!
However, where are Keith and Frank ???!!
It's been almost a month since we've heard from them !!!!
Glad you're doing well !!!

As part of my solo rehab I did box steps from various directions using aerobic steps with risers. I would focus lowering my weight slowly which is what you're doing when you walk down stairs. Once I completed my sets I would turn around, sit on the steps and stand up with my bad leg and lower my weight slowly. Full confidence going down steps or step slopes can take quite a while.

Just want to say to all, keep up the hard work. It’s been 4 years since I tore mine at age 59, but I had a complete recovery and never looked back. I would hate to have to do it again though.

I am able to go down stairs well as a function of strength, however, I have yet to regain full confidence; as you so eloquently stated !! I am at almost 31 weeks post surgery. I find that the last hurdle is to overcome the fear of re-injuring myself !!

Hello All and I particular Bruce Hunt! No relation but great last name. For you Bruce a belated welcome from me. I agree with the others comments regard your ROM at this point post OP. If you are concerned at its progress do speak with your surgeon. The PT should be in touch with him/her and apprasing them of your progress. Not sure PT should bend to a point it is overly painful. There will be pain as you progress but not intense! Best of luck to you in this challenge ...it too shall pass.
And hello to all the rest of you survivors of the "knee" . I had my last PT session and am now my own PT specialist. I have just started back running. Not as easy as it once was was. The knee has not been an issued from pain standpoint. This is a good thing but my cardio is the pits! I have to get out the door and just do it. I did do a solid workout for an 80 year old last Thursday. 3 miles on bike, 1/2 mile on elliptical and 1.1 mile on treadmill plus bench pressed 5 X 75lbs. Also did balance exercises, toe raises, wall sits, etc.
plan to do this 2-3 times a week. My final ROM at PT was 133. Up and down stairs no problem. In my coaching my high school XC team I have to be very careful in any hill areas the run in during meets. Overall thankful for my progress.
And very thankful for all the support I have received here among my fellow travelers. I wish all continued success in your journeys to recovery. I will check in periodically to see how all are doing. My best to each and everyone of you!
Frank

Hi All,
First off I'm not much of a skier, howver I was diagnosed with a torn right quad on Wednesday, October 23rd for which I'll be having surgery on Tuesday the 29th. I missed a step on the stairs outside my home and sent my kneecap somewhere it didn't belong. Initially the ER said it was a dislocation of the patella, but the ortopedic confirmed the quad tear. I feel so badly for my wife having to take on all the household chores while also getting me to pre-op appointments. I've been reading most of the day about other folks experiences as I came across the forum while trying to determine what I'll be facing going forward. Being stuck in the house all day with limited mobility is taking a lot to get used to. I hope to continue reading about your recovery and would appreciate any tips on coping. Thank you.

Welcome. Sorry that you found us this way, but hope that the members here can help in the recovery.
I think you'll find that many in this discussion are not skiers but found the thread because of a tendon rupture search.

Heal well.

Tricia,
Thank you for the welcome! I do hope to learn from the experiences of others as I was told this is not a common injury as even my primary doctor indicated he's never treated a patient with a quad rupture.

From what I understand its not only not common but often takes a long time to be diagnosed.

The interesting thing is, we are a ski website first and foremost, but this is one of the top 5 most viewed threads on Pugski.com and we are finding that many who come here for this thread are not skiers, but people who are finding this topic discussion informative.

Hope it helps you.

Tricia,
I do feel fortunate to have found the forum with real people having the same experience as I don't see how I can't benefit. Up until I found your site everything I was reading only caused more confusion on my part.

If I could impose, did you have day surgery? My understanding is that they will be putting me under and that the surgery Wil be 45 minutes to an hour and in recovery for 2 hours before being released. How are you doing getting around your home? Are you on pain meds or Tylenol?
I sincerely look forward to hearing about your progress and following in your shadow.
