Another PT day and another modest ROM gain. I hit 120 today...yea!!! The things they are having me do are paying off, Seems each time I go now they add one more item or adjust the number of repeats to things I have been doing. Nice to see positive results that is for sure.

UPDATE----- UDATE 5/18/19 UPDATE :( BAD NEWS ---- WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY CAN MAKE :(
Yesterday afternoon around 5:15pm I drove Gilroy CA to our CA Section Championship Track meet. The site is 70 miles from my home. I had a high school Senior girl in the 1600m race attempting to Qualify for the Ca State Championship meet the following week. after parking my car I walked up to the venue. I went thru a gate and as I start to walk in I tripped and fell on a very low unmarked curb :( net result after immediately driving back to my home 70 miles away. I then had my next door neighbor take me to the hospital about half mile from my home. I was there from 7:30pm until 1:45am! After a series of X-Rays on both my left hand and left knee (one with repaired Quad) the results were as follows: Fractured wrist and broken finger----Knee cap fractured in half left to right :( Absolutely 100% devastated all my work on the knee gone in an instant.
Spoke to my surgeon by phone today and he said if the Quad repair is still intact that would be a silver lining. He felt putting knee cap back would not be an issue any way near the Quad repair. either way a major set back for me along with the wrist.
I see doc Monday and will know more then...

Aw hell no Frank☹️
My thoughts are with you buddy.
Once again, a seemingly insignificant trip or stumble has profound consequences. However, I've gotta say, if anyone's gonna come back quickly from this setback, it's gonna be you. Look at the fantastic progress you made in such a short time and there's no reason at all that this will be any different.
Stay strong and keep us posted.

Hi everyone
23 weeks post op today. I'm a long way from being what I consider to be normal function but when I look back to 23 weeks ago, I couldn't have imagined making this much progress by this point. I guess patience really is a virtue.
I'm now doing 7-10 hours weekly on recumbent stationary bike with highest resistance level I can manage, also squat rack with 40kg, Leg Press at 60kg, leg extensions at 35kg, hamstring curls at 45kg, along with all of the isometric and theraband exercises. I'm now also doing twice daily exercises to try and correct my pelvic tilt. Feeling like there aren't enough hours in the day. Work spoils everything
Regards to everyone.

Fantastic Keith !!!!!
You're an inspiration to me !!! Can't wait to be 23 weeks out and have what you have now !!!!
My update:
13 weeks from surgery
Saw my OS yesterday and he was pleased with my progress. 113 passive ROM 107 Active ROM
Out of the brace, he cleared me for Leg Press leg extensions and leg curls with weight.
Did the leg press today at 75 lbs 5 sets of 10 reps at a 90-100 degree ROM (far cry from the 400+ lbs pre injury) gaining some strength back.
Long way to go !!
Hope all is going well for you,
Keeping Frank in my thoughts and prayers too. What a bummer ! Hope to hear from him soon to see how he's doing !!!
Take care !!!

Thank Cortney...I am staying as positive as one can give this setback :) ..the injury to my fingers makes this little more difficult since I can not put weight on hand to lift my body. Oh well, another challenge tp overcome.

All sounds like some good things happening! Your right about time to get it all done which is tough if you working a job. I like the "patience is a virtue" comment as once we are making progress we hope for more and more. I may get operated on this Wed at earliest. I will keep you and Cortney posted.

Hi everyone

Cortney, your quote -"Can't wait to be 23 weeks out and have what you have now !!!!", Kinda puts things in focus for me. Feeling grateful for what function I have at the moment. Managed a decent 7 mile walk yesterday without any walking aids and pelvis and back feel good too. Pilates stretches before and after. I'm certain they're making a huge difference.
Great to hear you're out of the brace, onwards and upwards buddy. It's a great feeling to get back into the gym too.

Frank - thinking of you buddy, hope you've had the surgery and that all went well.

Hello All...been quite awhile since I have posted so here is brief update. I had surgery one week ago for my fractured kneecap same leg as Quad repair. The kneecap was broken in half horizontally so it required plate and screws to bring together. I am back in my straight leg brace now for minimum of 6 weeks, no bending! One week down 5 to go! This will delay any PT until after the bones of kneecap fuse. Then much like the Quad issue I will need to build range of motion back... :) Tomorrow I revisit Hand specialist for my broken fingers to be put in cast! I have been in a splint since the injury...I presume once it is removed I will be doing PT for it as well. Never in my life have I had a history of falling :( now I do. So it goes. I am doing my best to stay positive though with this set back tough.
The difference this time is no bending the knee by not being unable to unlock the brace even a little bit. I was able to do so after a few weeks with the quad. Also the hand issue makes it much more difficult to raise myself to standing position or holding on to a crutch! Well that is it for now more next week. do keep a good thought for me. Much success to all of you in your road to recovery and may it be sooner rather later,,,Frank

Hi Frank

I've just seen your respective posts. I normally receive email alerts for new posts on this thread, but not had anything for a while, just checked in on the off-chance that there maybe some updates.
Great to hear your knee surgery was a success. Whilst it's an obvious and unwanted setback, at least you know what to expect in managing ROM etc. You made fantastic progress in such a short period of time with the Quad injury and I don't see any reason that this will be any different. Youve got a real positive attitude and that makes a hell of a difference.
Are you able to do any PT at all, such as leg raises, side raises etc?
Stay strong buddy and you'll be on the road back before you know it.

Hi Keith...Great to see your response as I thought I may be alone here :) No exercises yet. I see doc on Thursday 6/13 for the stitches removal. Not sure if he would allow the types of things we are allowed to do with the Quad repair injury. I will find out!!! From my pre-op meeting he said immobile for 6 weeks as the bones fuse together. I am anxious to get going. Today I did start rehab on hand for broken fingers. This is another whole issue...painful manipulation. Thanks for checking in as it is much appreciated.
So how are you doing currently??? … good I hope. These things are tough on anyone young and old. Do take care :) Frank

Frank you're NOT alone !!
Stay positive even though it's hard !! We're here for you !!!
Sorry I was late in responding ! No, excuses, I just got busy and didn't check the site !!
A shared part of your rehab this time, which might apply to you being locked straight for 6 weeks....
My OS locked me straight for 6 weeks with NO bending....
My ROM came a little more slowly than yours BUT it came !!!!
Yours will come too !!
I'm here for you and I will make it a point to check in regularly !!
I'm currently at 115 active ROM and 120 Passive....
Stay strong and I want to thank you for your encouragement when I was discouraged !!!!

Hi Frank and Keith
Frank, how is going ? Any updates ?
Keith, How are you ?
My update is somewhat mundane....
ROM 125.. Leg press, leg extensions hamstring curls strengthening....
Going upstairs with slight help from my cane
Going down stairs is still quite nerve wracking, I still need to be hyper vigilant .
Thanks again for the support and encouragement from both of you !!!
Take care and send an update when possible

Hi Cortney/Frank

How are you both doing?
Not posted for a while, due to family bereavement involving some travelling etc.
I feel like I've hit a bit of a plateau with my recovery. 26 weeks out from surgery and happy with maximum ROM, but still experiencing a lot of stiffness around the knee and the rubber band feeling is still ever present . Tried to jog in the treadmill couple of days ago and it didn't go well. As soon as I planted the repaired leg, the pain was awful and I really struggled to get any momentum going. Walking is much better and managed a great hike of around 12 miles on decent terrain last week, without any subsequent discomfort
Thinking of you both and hope you're making progress.

Hello Courtney/Keith… Not much to update at this point. Still in the straight leg brace so have not bent the knee since operation on 5/29/19 :( I did email my surgeon about 2 weeks ago asking him if OK to do some rehab items. I found a page of straight leg exercises I was give when I started rehab of the original Quad operation. They were the first 3 exercises I did at each of my 2 a-week sessions. Each was without bending. Plus I also did the "gas pedal" exercises. This was a straight leg with a large rubber band around my foot with leg straight and me pulling band back holding it. Then I would flex foot as if stepping on "gas pedal" in a car 3 x10. The doc said go for it. These work quad, hammy, calve and Achilles!!! I am hoping these will give me a bit of a head start when released to PT. My broken fingers are being rehabbed for 3 weeks now, Very painful but getting there. Have to be able to make a fist without pain.. I do not see my doc for leg until July 15th which will be the 6 week healing from knee repair plus 6 days. Then I hope to be turned loose to work the leg to get my ROM going :) That is it. Glad you are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel ...as long as its not a train!!!

Sorry to hear about the family loss...RIP. Strange you can hike over terrain without pain but the Jog is an issue. Continued improvement to you and I hope relief from pain if you are able to jog!!! Me I hope to be able to jog again someday. Do check on me again after July 15th.
