Sun Peaks B.C. in winter, Victoria B.C. in summer
Whistler is usually the first to open in B.C. in mid Nov. but this year they are going to open Nov. 23. Is this a Vail thing?

Sun Peaks is hoping to be the first to open in B.C. on Nov.18, helped by some snow making but really accomplished by a ton of annual summer grooming.

I am somewhat and plan to have it be my getaway so I'll be spending more time there this winter. Do you live in the area?
Small town in eastern Idaho- bout an hour+ away. Have another small area about twenty minutes from the house- can see the lights from night skiing operations when it is clear. When you get up this way PM and if I am around area (work schedule) would be happy to meet.

not a Vail thing
Whistler/Blackcomb is always open for US Thanksgiving.
One hill will open earlier, it usually is Whistler.
But the official date when both hills are open never changes.
Official opening is always planned long in advance with music events, parties and freebies to hype and encourage over night line camp outs and turn it into an event. This year is addition to the usual season passes and gear give aways if you happen to get into the right gondola it's free heli skiing.

Whistler/Blackcomb like Sun Peaks also does a pretty good job of summer grooming intermediate runs. Combined with all the snow making you could ski now. Still not safe off piste though with all the big rocks yet to be covered. As soon as its open lots will be heading out there.
Another reason they don't rush the "official" opening.

Wildcat and Mount Snow To Open Early For 2017-2018 Ski Season

Wildcat Mountain and Mount Snow will be opening this Saturday, November 11, 2017, marking one of the earliest openings for Wildcat in the past decade, and one of the earliest opening dates on record for Mount Snow.

In preparation for opening day, Wildcat began its snowmaking operations early this morning.

Mount Snow will begin snowmaking operations on Tuesday, as they fire up their brand-new snowmaking system that is now the most powerful system in the Northeast, thanks to $30 million in upgrades. Carinthia Parks at Mount Snow, just named the #1 Park in The East by Transworld Snowboarding, also plans to open on Saturday morning with a full top-to-bottom terrain park.

Both resorts plan to continue snowmaking operations throughout the weekend and beyond, as conditions allow, with a plan to open additional terrain throughout the weekend and into the following week.

Timberline (OR) announced they will be open 7 days a week starting tomorrow, Friday 11/10.

Crystal Mt (WA) will announce later today whether they will open this weekend, depending on anticipated snowfall. If not, it’s looking good for the following weekend at Crystal, Stevens and probably other places in the PNW.

So in all likelihood I won’t need to feel deprived because I can’t travel to Grand Targhee for their opening on 11/17. :wag:

Bromley in southern vermont has started to make snow and they are sticking with the originally planned opening date of the day after thanskgiving. The difference this year is they'll have beginner terrain open. They usually just have one top to bottom blue and a mid mountain to bottom blue open but this year the weather is better so they can blow snow on some of the green trails. Here's hoping this is setting the tone for a nice winter.

Crystal Mt, WA website this morning:

MOUNTAIN REPORT

Tips Up! (11/14/17 6:10 a.m.)

We have a very exciting announcement to make! We will open with 3 lifts on Wednesday, Nov. 15th. The Discovery, Chinook Express & Forest Queen Express lifts will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting tomorrow. Lift tickets will be $45.

The coverage on Downhill and Queens run is really good however we’re still a little thin around the base so we suggest leaving your new equipment at home until we have more snow.

Unfortunately the strong winds have blown a lot of the snow that has been falling off the upper ridges so we still need just a little more snow to open the upper-mountain. We’re hoping to have Rainier Express, Green Valley and the Mt. Rainer Gondola open by Friday (conditions permitting).

Come take some cruisers this week and make sure you’ve got everything you need. Right Angle Sports will be open with the latest ski and snowboard clothing and accessories so stop by and check it out. Rentals will also be available and Bootworks will be open.

The Cascade Grill and Chinook Cafe will be open starting at 7 a.m. for breakfast and coffee so get here early. The Bullwheel will open at 10:30 a.m. for lunch and a full bar. Campbell Basin Lodge will be open for access to restrooms only.

This is only the beginning of what will be a long and excellent season so come ease into winter. We can’t wait to see you on the slopes!

Stevens Pass reported 10” overnight, with more on the way the rest of the week. I’m betting they will open by this weekend.

Sugarbush in VT and Loon in NH both have announced they are opening this friday. Lincoln will be open at Sugarbush. They will be spinning the Valley House Quad for advanced skiing and riding on Snowball and Spring Fling. Park opens Friday. Mt. Ellen opens December 16th.

Loon will have top to bottom coverage starting friday.

Exciting.

Saw on Facebook that Bachelor is opening this Saturday and offering deals on 3 of 5 and 4 of 6 day tickets beginning 11/16.

They've received 89/96" since Oct. 1 and have 33/36" base at West Village/Mid-Mountain.

Meanwhile as reported in another thread Vail has postponed opening until Thanksgiving.

Stevens announced they are opening Thursday 11/16.

So, for all those people who are jonesing for early season snow, consider a flight to Seattle. When areas here open, it’s not WRODs, it’s natural snow and a lot of terrain opens up pretty quickly.
