This optical illusion has to do with where the light comes from in the actual room occupied by the viewer. The mind assumes the light on those plastic containers comes from the room's actual light source. If you have trouble seeing the containers switch from upside down to right side up, flip the photo over. This reverses where the light appears to be coming from. It changes how we perceive their orientation because we visually recognize three-dimensional bulges and indentations through light and shadow.
