View west from West Peak Hang Gliding launch zone. Killington mountains are to the right. Okemo is out of view to the left. A few hours later would be the time for photos.

Quechee, VT from 56 feet up.

Walkway in the trees at Vermont Institute of Natural Science, VINS, in Quechee. The black walkway is a plastic grid with a grit on the top surface. It’s nearly silent walking on it with rubber soles.

The walkway, tower is only about a year old. This guy was tensioning the guy wires.

VINS is known for their raptor center. They also do wild bird rescue and have a bird hospital. They get hundreds of injured birds a year. I think last year was 900. Survival rate is about 40%.

Snowy Owl. Almost all the raptors they have in captivity have injuries which wouldn’t let them survive in the wild. This owl has been at VINS since 1996.

Bald Eagle. I forget the injury to this one. Some raptors they have fell out of the nest as hatchlings, some hit by cars. One bird has been at the center since 1988.

Screech Owl. Apparently they don’t screech. It’s very small for an owl so it’s camouflage helps as it looks like tree bark. Huge eyes. Owls can rotate the head 270 degrees with their 14 neck vertebra.

They have a few undamaged raptors that have been raised in captivity. They do demos flying above people’s heads while seated. They’re precision flyers and come within inches. They don’t do demos with the injured birds but do short training flights with some you can watch.

Took a short run through dark woods today. The ground is totally covered with pine needles and leaves. Heavy canopy of conifer needles. It's magical in there.
IMG_0411.jpeg

The ground underfoot is spongy and silent.
IMG_0414.jpeg

Stands of hemlocks make parts of this trail dark.
IMG_0420.jpeg

Not too many covered rocks under this dense leaf cover.
IMG_0417.jpeg

On the way out the ferns are fading.

I also took a walk here.
IMG_0399.jpeg

This piece of terrain is very different from the one where I ran. There's sun and granite.
IMG_0403.jpeg

And a lot of red.
IMG_0400.jpeg

Rocks, red, and lots of white bark birches, mostly dead.
IMG_0402.jpeg

Here's the walk across the beaver pond. Beaver dam drowned these trees.
IMG_0398.jpeg

The pathway alongside the pond has compact white pines that get a lot of sun.

Lots of color on that trail. Looks like fun for this time of year.

Not much color around here... so I went looking for some in WV... this is all from Blackwater Falls state park, not far from Timberline and Canaan Valley ski resorts. Since it's at higher elevation, it tends to change earlier and better than here around DC.

I love VINS, and the screech owl. They used to have a saw whet owl, and somehow it was even cuter than the screech owl.
