"For nine years, the most vertical feet gained in 24 hours stood as a skiing record that couldn’t be broken. Skiers tried over the years to eclipse the seemingly inhuman 60,000-foot record, but all fell short.

But on March 18, Mike Foote broke that record, skiing 61,200 vertical feet. He completed the outrageous feat of endurance at Montana’s Whitefish Mountain Resort."

Not a record I aspire to, that's for sure

Wow, I read the headline, and thought "That's no record, at all......not close." Missed a detail or two!

Then I read that he climbed 60,000 feet as well.........and keyed into the uphill-downhill part.

Incredible! Wow! What a motor! Huge congratulations!

Wow, I’m am worn out at 12,000

That's all downhill too, right? He did 61,000+ skinning up first, then skiing back down.

He had a lot of support too! From the article :

Foote worked with a support team that paced with him up the mountain and helped during transitions. They supplied food, gels, and hydration.

He used several pairs of skins to dry out between runs, and grooming machines ran during the attempt to keep the ski hill in good riding condition.

They even groomed for him during the attempt! Crazy.

To be more exact, he climbed one slope 60 times, apparently Ed's Run, and not the full rise of the lift, maybe up to the Jesus statue. The full vertical is more like twice what he was climbing each lap.
Yep - he climbed Whitefish mountain 60 times in one day.

The record for most downhill skied in 24 hours using lifts is about 340,000 feet.

I can also ski a lot longer if I keep my runs under 1K, My legs fall to pieces a lot quicker skiing long runs.. Climbing 60K is crazy enough without the skiing back down part..

So I skinned big mt a few mornings this year on off days when I was camping in the lot. I think it took me one hour to skin up and ski down the easier of the uphill routes over by 5. I looked up what Mike did it during a skimo event or something and now can't find it due to this recent news. I think it was something like 14mins for that one lap. Super impressive.

This year's results: https://skiwhitefish.com/assets/WFWO_2018_Results.pdf

Last year's: https://skiwhitefish.com/assets/WFWO_Results_2017_Final.pdf

Then they had skimo race league, but they only posted one week. Given the light situation, I'm assuming they did this on Ed's. Foote isn't listed. http://skiwhitefish.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/WNRL_SkiMo_Results_Week_1.pdf
