Hi There

As the snow here on the east coast is being washed away my thoughts are trying to capitalize on the enormous storm that is plummeting the mountains out west. I am an intermediate cruiser. Love groomers. Any idea where I should go? I will be travelling with my 17 year old son. I read about Northstar - which looks great. I just dont know where to stay etc. Any suggestions ideas?

If you like long cruisers, Northstar is a good potential choice. That statement covers much of the front-side terrain, and whatever is groomed on the Backside is generally a long "blue-black".

There are a ton of on-property options for lodging there, including places right in the village, and condos with shuttles to the base village, and the Ritz-Carlton which is ski in / ski out.. There are also more budget-friendly hotels in Truckee (a Best Western, a Hampton Inn, and a couple of locally owned places).

You can stay in Tahoe City/Kings Beach as well, but that means coming to Northstar over Brockway Summit, which on a storm day means chains. That said, from TC, you could also head over to Diamond Peak in Incline Village.

As for food / après' ski, downtown Truckee boast a ton of options.

You can fly into RNO and rent a car; the drive is around 40 minutes in good weather. Unless you're flying private, in which case, you can fly right into Truckee :)

Are you Epic or Ikon for passes?

With this incoming good snow there are a ton of cruisers at heavenly too. This would be South lake Tahoe which has more affordable lodging as well as a bit more nightlife
If you are just about skiing, and you don't want to drive or rent a car, there are shuttles from Reno and you won't need transportation to go from room to lift if you choose motel wisely.

For all these places you are best if your trip can include at least some midweek days for crowds and lines. Need to know how long you are planning and if you want to just ski or take a tour of different mtns.

On pass pricing, by mid March the promos for next year's passes may pop up, so if you are willing to commit to next year there maybe some chances to potentially get a deal.

Basic info for you to get oriented here. Come back with your questions

At short notice, maybe the easiest logistically and cheapest Lake Tahoe destination for intermediates with massive amounts of terrain plus best genuine lake experience views from slopes would be to lodge in South Lake Tahoe near Stateline (casinos) midweek and ski Heavenly, Kirkwood, and or Sierra-At-Tahoe. Thus fly into Reno and take airport shuttles to SLT.

SLT walk to skiing is much less expensive than near resort northern Tahoe lodging. Heavenly like the other large Tahoe resorts does however have expensive walk up lift ticket prices. Last week I spent $59 for a 2-star Thursday night room that goes for $150 weekends.

What else is important to you aside from groomers? Fine dining? Service? Lodging preferences/kitchen/tube? Duration and budget?

If you like supporting independent ski areas and don’t mind driving around, go to Mt Rose, Diamond Peak, Homewood, and Sugar Bowl.

If money is no object, go to Northstar and stay at the Ritz.

What is important is ski in/out kind of place as well as good food........I can't swing the Ritz......but so far this is all great advice. I will keep reading and learning.

You might be able to score on-property at Northstar through VRBO at a lower rate; we bought the house up in Truckee in 2010, so I haven't booked lodging since then!

There are some one bedroom condos that are(or used to be) more affordable at the base of Northstar.
I haven't been in touch with that for a few years.

If Northstar works out, it's a great choice. Heavenly is also fantastic for intermediate cruising, and there's a ton of relatively affordable lodging in South Lake Tahoe and Stateline, close to the gondola or tram base. Lift tickets at both spots are going to be very pricy, but keep an eye out to see if there are deals by the time you get there.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is selling a rest-of-the-season pass for less than day tickets at Northstar/Heavenly... it's a fun area too at a much nicer price point, but I believe there's no slopeside lodging. Easy drive from South Lake Tahoe unless there's a good amount of fresh snow.
