Humor in today’s ride was when we were coming down some swoopy switchbacks when I suddenly felt like something was biting my shoulder blade. God forbid I stop because I hate stopping, so I tried to grab my shirt and yank it with one hand to no avail. I finally stopped and did karate chop moves with some animated language. Got home and sure enough, something decided I was a tasty bite for lunch! :roflmao:
I thought you were going to say you ripped your shirt off on the trail.

Daily rides with the Steamboat enduro in 3 weeks. 2 days of 25+ miles on that one. We’re going to do about 20 tomorrow. Bigger climbs and steeper tech descents. The son who is racing joins tomorrow.

Red Rock Canyon, Section 16. 1,300’ of climb in 3 miles, 1,300’ of technical descent in a loose, rooted, rock garden, all on Pikes Peak granite pebble, fall down the mountain.

Not featured: Axel, who keeps getting faster on sketchy descents. Some hike a bike by this one, but he rode some of the goods and most of the lower trail.

It’s a nice climb up - the hikers all do this in reverse.

I'm jealous! Fun, fun! If you are looking for more good up/down training rides, Elk Meadows with a climb up to Bergen Peak in Evergreen is one of my favorites and it also gets you up to 9700 ft without driving to the high country. Mt Falcon and White Ranch (which I saw you posted) are my other goto rides for big climbs. I'm cautious on those technical descents, though, as I've gotta be careful with my lycra. ;)

Thanks! We did 3 Sisters in Evergreen up to Bergen (I think). That’s a good ride.

The Pikes Peak trail system is pretty unreal down here with the amount of interconnected trails - it’s easy to stitch together long rides. If you do the trail I rode yesterday from the highway 24 parking lot it’s 12 miles and about 2K of ascent and that’s basically in town.

Mostly I need to keep working on speed in tech descents, not because I’m going to be remotely race competitive, but because trying to do that stuff slow is so much worse :geek:.

I’m in the “trying not to suck” phase, which could be terminal . The new bike, OTOH, is incredible.

Seek smoothness, and the speed will come!

Best advice I ever got from the nice old guy that got me into motocross racing at age 17.

Note that this "old" guy was probably barely 40 at the time.

My son told his race coach at Western Colorado when he first joined the team last year “I’m fast, but not very good in the air yet”.

The response: “If you aren’t good in the air, you aren’t fast.”

Did anyone see the video of Ted Ligety crashing his mountain bike at Deer Valley and breaking his wrist?

His wife gave birth to twins a few days later.

Wonder how this will affect his training for the race season.
I posted this earlier in the race section in a thread called Twins for Ted.
That question came up there as well ;)

True, but.......with the obvious exceptions (doubles, table tops, etc.), it's worth remembering that "air time is more time".

And more time means you don't have to wait around for the awards ceremony! ;)

I am at no risk of having to wait around for the awards ceremony .

The brain training progression of downhill sports is fascinating. I keep looking at stuff and saying “there’s no way I would have ridden this x weeks ago.”

It’s been fun riding the Pikes Peak kitty litter past few rides. Captain Jacks to Chutes laps is a killer Colorado Springs ride. Jacks is a screamer in the loose granite and then Chutes is about a mile of whip fast high berms after a techy drop-in. Highly recommended.

Captain Morgan’s that splits off the lower part of Jacks is so loose and steep that you can’t really brake for long sections. Maybe worth it after a big rain. Maybe not.

Steep roll into Morgan. (really, stay on Jacks)

This loose terrain is full of tight tech and channeled by brake sliding.

Chutes gets you feeling like you can ride a bike again.

At least until dark. He ‘rode’ more of Morgan’s than I did.

We rode with a friendly couple on a trail that was new to me. Lots of switchbacks and ledgy feeling stuff that made me amp up my game.

Meanwhile, I saw a deer on a recent ride down by Carson on Clear Creek trail.

We had a few business calls and a meeting today that I knew would take up most of the afternoon so I decided to meet up with a friend this morning for a really quick ride.
She wanted to explore a section of Emigrant trail off 89 near Truckee which has several trailhead start point options.
The trailhead she chose is a new start point for me. We found a fun short loop that assured I'd be back for my calls and meetings.
It was a fun, quick jaunt.
I don't have any pics of me but here's my friend.

White Ranch in Golden, Lower Longhorn. This is a shorter ride than the full climb and descent, but a really nice lap of about a 1,000’ of climbing and descent over about 5 miles.

Lower Longhorn is quite techy, but not so steep as Middle so easier to get the speed up a bit.
