Summit clouds gave way to a sunshine soaked day. Gondola line was rewarded with a early start at 9:30 as first day buffs were out. Mike Solimano was welcoming the giddy skiers with many retuning the love. Quick trip down the Peak walkway had us on the snow for the first time since June. Snow surface on Rime improved quickly with the skier traffic. Warming temps soon allowed the terrain to bump up. We hiked back up to the peak lodge for the lunch before our afternoon session. Morning lift line was gone as many made it a short day. Lots of fun bumps to play for the later day laps. As first days go this was one of the better ones.

Early Season Grade - B

Quote the Day - This is my favorite day of the year.

Just curious, What was the "Special Gift" they the promised everyone for showing up the first day?

Roar of man turning water into a frozen delight filled the morning air. Top to Bottom snowmaking on Superstar making ready for the World Cup a little over four weeks from today. Triple thick blanket of new production painted the white skiing ribbons running thru the high green forest. You better pay attention kind of snow had me wishing I had brought my 106 under foot pavers. Skiing muscles that enjoyed an easy Summer cried out in protest. Wife was among those checking off their first day of the season. Love hanging under the guns as time just passes slower. All too soon we were hiking up the walkway glad to see the guns going on Great Northern.

Rays of sunshine bore thru the building cloud cover. Summit temperature was hovering at 30 degrees. Light overnight dusting of snow covered the walkway. Perfectly groomed surface paired with a handful of Tuesday skiers allowed some of the fastest runs of the short season. Felt good to get in some high speed turns as I followed a buddy trying to match his carving board deep turns. Light morning snow showers took on a serious tone before noon producing some fresh track turns. Some of the most fan friendly conditions we have had so far.

Winter wonderland with the morning snow taking center stage. Summit temperature checked in at 27 degrees. Base depths on Great Northern are building with top to lift skiing on tap next. Guns going on the Downdraft Headwall meant we soon will be adding our first double black trail. Pretty amazing snow conditions make it hard to believe that it is still October. Racers were carving away, youngsters were popping about with lots of room for all. Looking forward to some more trails rather than just A or B.

Quote of the Day - October turns seem to have a high giggle factor.

GIS, Love reading your daily reports. We are thinking about heading up. Is it better get there in the morning to it groomed or better to wait mid day to soften up?

First bell has been best. Not a whole lot of softening going on as temps have been chilly. Mid winter quality carving surface has been the rule.

Cloudy gray start with the upper mountain hidden in the clouds. Brushing the hoarfrost off the thermometer revealed a temperature of 23 degrees. Guns continued to bury Great Northern with snowmaker training being held on Rime. Soft smooth carving turns were easy to lay down on the groomed surface. Dancing under the guns as snow was been born overhead and immediately being loved by my skis. We lapped, laughed and passed away the morning hours in winter bliss.

Remember to save a day or two of your Ikon pass for the spring fun. Spring passes are a great deal as the late season starts mid March.
