Been there! Probably 35 years ago. We drove through John Day country with my uncle from the Tri Cities in his 1970 VW van on dirt roads. Gorgeous country!

Not much has changed but the main roads are paved. VW micro bus were too cool.

I loved my time at John Day. I think I camped south of the Painted Hills. We were floating down the John Day river on pool floats.

When you're camping in the desert it's important to keep your coolers in the shade. I was soaking a blanket in the river and laying it on top of the coolers too. Apparently I took a break. Yes, I still have those shorts.
