Alta should start selling half-day tickets (9 am - 1 pm) for $30.

Alta had a half day morning pass almost exactly like that when I was in college. I think it actually cost $31 if memory serves correctly. I had arranged my schedule during my senior year so that I could ski Tuesday mornings, Thursday mornings, and all day Friday. I had a friend who had a lot of schedule flexibility so we had a policy that if Alta was reporting 10 inches or more on any of those days I would show up at his apartment to pick him up around 8 am. It was a big snow year. That may not have been the golden age of skiiing but it was the standout year of my skiing life.

Of course, with generally lower season pass rates (even before inflation) my per day cost of lift tickets last year was probably right around $31 even with several days at areas not included on my pass.

@Carl and @SecretAgentMan totally echo my feelings about skiing with my kids. That has been the highlight of my skiing life for the last 20 years. We have so many good memories from skiing as a family. I am a better father and have closer relationships with my 3 boys because of skiing. The time in the car and on the lift just naturally leads to conversations and topics that might otherwise not come up.

As for the general topic, this strikes me as a grass is always greener type discussion. The truth is skiing is both better and worse now for many of the reasons brought up earlier in this thread. The breakdown is often just the opposite side of the same coin. Fast lifts and fat skis have turned many powder “days” into a two run affair. Of course, those same skis have turned crud skiing into a much more enjoyable experience. Those fast lifts allowed me to tire out my still early season legs in about 3 hours this morning.

One thing I can say with perfect confidence, it is the golden age (to date) of ski equipment. The equipment I ski on today is so, so, so much better than the relative crap I used to use. The only problem is I can’t stop buying it!

Such a personal thing isn't it...

I had a golden age when I was discovering skiing and learning to ski in the late 70's to mid 80's - the mountains seemed so massive and the lifts (here's looking at you Mt Hutt poma and Tekapo chair) so difficult and the techniques so strange, but conquering them with my brother and sister and Mum and cousins was just the most unforgettable and unrepeatable experience over many years.

I had a golden age in the 90's with my university friends at our club every weekend, skiing and drinking and partying like it was so great to be alive, and travelling and working with them at ski areas in Canada/US

I'm having a golden age right now watching my kids learn and love it and flying around the mountain with their mates

I've had a lot of great ski days since I started in 1974. I've been lucky to ski all over the US and some in Europe. But the best days I've had is when I skied with my daughters as they were growing up. Those are some of the best memories in my life. Although they are all grown up and have busy lives, we do get out together occasionally and I cherish those days!

@Carl hits "the nail on the head" with his post. Skiing with your children when they are young will certainly result in you and your children having golden memories about skiing for the rest of your lives. Fathers, find the time to take your sons skiing.

I'm in my 3rd "Golden Age" of skiing:

#1 was being the kid and skiing with my dad and brothers
#2 was skiing with my kids
#3 is skiing with my grandkids

Remember the “Old Man” in our ski house going to bed a 9 PM. He was about 35 years old at the time. Dreaded getting that old. Now I am lucky to just stay awake past 9. Golden age is gone. Everything now is coming up Silver and Gray.

Golden age... who knows? Personally I'm thankful for:
  • Shaped skis that take a good 15 years off aging legs:golfclap:
  • Huge choice of skis to make the job easier in special conditions:)
  • Snow making that means we get some skiing even when the snow gods don't co-operate:thumb:
  • Large capacity jets that let us ski other continents:yahoo:
  • Ski outfits that (hopefully) will never return to the fashion abyss of the 70's (and some parts of the 80s). What were they thinking?
  • The dubdubdub for ready access to ski porn in the off season - no more stalking the vid shop for Warren's latest:popcorn:
  • Instructors who say more than "ben ze nees":pug:
  • Smart phones for finding family/friends on the mountain. (Unfortunately that did make it easier for work to find us :()
  • High capacity, high speed lifts for shorter queues and more daily vertical :daffy:

The golden age of skiing for me started with Hot Dog the Movie and ended with Aspen Extreme. Of course the equipment now doesn’t compare, but for “skiing is cool” and industry fun factor, those days were great. Probably didn’t hurt that I worked in a ski shop while going to college and skied for free.

Had some great times in the 80 and 90's. Wife and I ran the International Firefights games at Tahoe a 5 day event. Great people from all over the world. Racing in Australia, a week in Portillo with NASTC. Endless days running Code 3 Ski Club and racing, training, hot tubes and après afterwards. Great skiing and racing with my bud Ted.

Although those days are gone, things haven't changed to the negative. Being 76yrs old just shifts things a bit. Two season passes for $200.00 and free at Whitefish, Whitewater and Red so things aren't all that bad.

The Golden Age for me is on days like this:

FullSizeRender_1.jpg That I can still enjoy.

Reading this it really sounds like many of us have hit the "Metallic Age". As the old joke states; "Gold in your teeth, silver in your hair, and lead in your butt".

The "Golden Age" is not about what years are the best to ski but more about what age you are when you enjoyed it the most. When you are young and maybe single it could be that is the "Golden Age" for you.

Fighting for a place in the front of liftline row

Stoke more powda on the fire

Ohhh, Ohhh, Ohhh gotta stay young you can never grow old
Ohhh, Ohhh, Ohhh the golden age of ski and ride

The golden age of ski and ride will never die
As long as the children feel the need to slide
Don't wanna crash - just want a ski my Rossi smash
Don't wanna wreck, just recreation
Don't wanna bite it but if your turn ain't round
You're gonna eat the ground

Don't mess with the snow
The lift's gotta move everybody groove
There ain't no trouble on the slopes now

What the real die hard powder folks like is powder midweek and that happens a lot. You only see pictures of us skiing on sunny days is because pictures don't turn out good on flat light days, overcast/foggy/in a cloud days of which we get a lot. My IO goggles run flat light lenses 95% of the time. Miss the sunshine at Mammoth and/or Tahoe. The picture I posted was taken March 3rd, 2016 and my powder partner Jeff took those with his camera and I of him. It was a little sunshine that broke out after skiing overcast all morning. That pic was taken about 11am and we were still skiing untracked - midweek.

We don't know if climate change will make skiiing worse or better.

Wait to worry.

With the new advancements, I'm looking forward to what's ahead.

And if you're that worried about climate change, stay home and stop skiiing, because you're only killing the environment.

I think the Golden Age is past. I think the 3rd post said it best.

Having said that, after riding Okemo's heated six-pack bubble chair on the cold day's in January for the past few years...that's a pretty sweet ride. I'll also agree the new equipment has made skiing easier and more enjoyable.

Those years of being a race team parent were pretty golden too. I still ski with other 3 parents I met during that time, 20 years ago. Even yesterday, in a lift line, still see other parents from back in the day and we ask how the kids are doing.

I think all my days on skis are Golden.

I've been skiing for less than a decade, so can't comment on the past. I do worry about the effect of climate change on our sport though. Studies like this one published in Powder Magazine make me wonder if my kids or grandkids will ever enjoy skiing the way I do:

Climate change will scrape weeks off both sides of the season at ski resorts from California to Maine, and the losses will be so much that even population growth won't be enough to sustain business in skiing. Ski resorts at lower elevations—especially in the Northeast and Upper Midwest, but also in the Pacific Northwest and towns like Park City, Utah—will suffer the most, some places seeing their season cut by upwards of 80 percent.

Snowmaking has already become a vital business component at ski resorts worldwide. But according to the study, if emissions are left unchecked, the planet will be so warm that even with snowmaking, 90 percent of ski resorts in the United States will not be able to open by Christmas—a time stamp that will put most ski resorts out of business.

Mid '70's Banff/Lake Louise... Goggles that fogged and ski clothes that failed in cold or rain and 210's fer the men...
But: if you were out there mostly you had some mountain smarts because 'then' skiing was a sport.
Skiing is Now an Entertainment.
We have modern gear that never fails and is so easy that All those masses of people -mostly turkeys looking for lunch; are able to go frikken Everywhere. "Turn Shape" never so easy to acquire; has gone down the crapper. Now it's turkeys in the 'expert' zones.
The 'golden age' is a Corporate marketing device in an As-If ski-world where it is no longer about skiing; tis about Restaurant,Retail and Reeelestate.
And then there is the Climate Bomb. We R FUKT. We melted the Arctic and broke the Jet-stream. These warmer temps mean we lose Four weeks of a REAL ski season. The season is more hit and miss so Don't book ahead. There is 17% more water vapor than in The Gold-age... and this acts like clouds to hold heat by reducing radiative cooling... Night-time temps are higher so there is no more spring-frozen awaiting the spring skier to wait for... and the sky is filled with big-ass cumulus. These Night-time Record breaking temps are 60% more frequent than the day-time records being broken...
And did I even mention Republicans ? Remember when hippies skied ? Now: Simulated Adults don't get the Climate story just write it off as a buzz-kill.
In Short: the golden age was the '50's when you could smoke on airplanes. Before we'd heard of The Anthropocene... which followed The Golden Age.
