At the end of the last season, I dropped skis in local tuning shop where they proudly advertise that they have the state-of-the-art Montana machine for tuning.
I requested a base grinding and bevel setup at 0.5/87 and it visually looked ok when I picked up .
But I just wanted to make sure if they did the right job as I requested so I measured the base bevel by the bevel guide with color marker on the surface of the base edge metal. (I understand it's not super accurate but I believe at least it gives good idea.)
What I surprisingly found is that base edge bevel was quite inconsistent from tip to tail.
The base edge bevel was about 0.5 under the foot as expected but it gradually increases to ~0.7~0.8 as it moves towards to the tip and tail.
So I brought it back to the shop and asked what's going on but I was told that the varying base bevel from tip to tail was actually normal and expected from the the machine.
I was quite confused but I just took it for granted at the time.
So I would like ask,
1. Is the inconsistent base bevel from tip to tail from Montana machine normal?
2, Technically, is it ok to have varying base bevel for skiing or is it worse or better than ideally consistent bevel from tip to tail?
3. If it's ideal to have the same bevel from tip to tail then how could I achieve that? Do I have to ask them to file by hand?
4. Any reliable tuning shop recommendation in Pocono, PA area?
Thank you in advance!
