It's more than that, though ... summer road construction throws monkey wrenches all over the place.
I drive it 3 days per week Mon-Thur frisco-den and den- Frisco for two full summers and haven't had any memorable problems....maybe I'm senile:huh:

Wait until 7 pm and it should be back close to normal. It's not that complicated. Until a storm, then advanced maneuvres may be required. ;)
I tried that a couple weeks ago on Christmas eve. Did not work. We ate in an Indian Casino (most restaurants are closed that night)
Hit I-70 below Idaho Springs at 8pm and found entire road closed. Smashed cars everywhere, a drunk crossed the centerline, injuries & 2 fatalities occurred.
otoh being late enough the detour only added 30 minutes. I find I-70 crazier than I-80 around Tahoe !

You said it, not me!

No, the worst problems (esp last summer) have been west of Frisco. Officers Gulch and Vail Pass had some ridiculous delays.

Tunnel approach is still slow at 7:40 P.M. this Sunday evening. Two hours Copper to DIA still isn't too bad, and it will keep getting better.

Well, I have left Denver on Saturday afternoon (4-5pm) on Saturday in the summer and have had horrible drives. I have left Breck early on Sunday mornings with similar results. Ski traffic much more predictable.

I think they turned it on early. Friends left Copper at 1:30 p.m. and they got stuck in heavy traffic. Said it was backed up all the way from just east of the Silverthorne on ramp to Bakerville except in the tunnel. Past that it was slow in the normal spots but moving.

Thus my suggestion to never drive i70 on Fri-Sun in the summer.

It should be noted that all bets are off if there's a winter storm that closes Loveland Pass. CDOT will close the tunnel at the top of every hour to let the hazmat trucks through that would otherwise go over the pass. Plus, there is additional traffic from Keystone and A-basin. That's when the I-70 horror stories happen.
