@Bill Talbot - Common for California new purchases. When you buy the car and are waiting for the DMV to send you new plates, you are supposed to put the dealer advertisement plate on (as you can see on the McLaren). Many people in CA leave the blank plate on as long as possible-some to avoid the auto toll booth payments, some just to brag that they bought a new car. When I used to live in CA, I knew people that would leave those on for more than a year after they bought the car. Just threw the DMV plates in the glove box for whatever reason.
