I did the hop turns in my backyard last night on xc skis. Helped a lot with the pole movements. Besides the much lighter skis, being able to flex the ankles made it easier. The drill was to ski about 100 feet, do 5 180s, ski back, and repeat. The 180s might not bet the objective of traditional hop turns but I could do them and it was fun.
Most people with xc skis should be able to do at least quarter turns for a while.
