planning trip to jh early March. If they don’t get recent snow what is the usual surface conditions(eg icy hard pack packed powder)? Is their grooming sufficient to break up surface conditions?

The elevation change there is enough to create micro climates with the summit being 20 degrees colder than the base. March should be quite nice there, but the possibility of a big storm is as good as anytime there in March.

There will always be well-maintained groomers all the way to the bottom along the north side of the resort (après Vous and Teton lifts). If it gets warm and sunny the ice will start in the lower Hobacks and go up along any southeastern slopes. In late March even the top of Rendezvous Bowl can get iced up in the mornings. The next week or so looks snowy and cold, so you should be in pretty good shape.

tetonsnowinfo is a good place to check out online.

A lot of JH has a Southeast exposure, so it can get pretty sun affected by early March and the temperatures at the base can often climb into the 50's. That being said, if you are an advanced skier, a lot of the northern exposures off of Sublette and Thunder lifts (which includes many of the famous double blacks, like Tower 3 chute, Paintbrush, Mushroom, Haps Gap, Thunder Bowl, the Alta Chutes, etc.) often will retain winter snow while the Hobacks and other slopes may close or become very difficult to ski. après Vous often has wonderful corn.

I've been there a fair amount in March. It is better earlier, but you can still have a great visit!
