Changes in Utah laws may force stores to dump beer that isn't sold before November 1st

From the article: Why Utah liquor stores will dump cases for beer

For nearly a century, Utah law has barred grocery and convenience stores from selling beer that was higher than 4% ABV (that’s 3.2% by weight). Higher-alcohol brews could be sold only in state-owned liquor stores.

The new law changes that, boosting the alcohol level for retail outlets to 5% ABV.

That means dozens of beers that fall between 4% and 5% ABV need to be moved out of liquor stores or dumped, DABC purchasing specialist Rob Southworth wrote in an email.

I have been following this and I figured they’d just sell through the lower stuff and restock with the higher stuff. Not sure why they’d be forced to dump.

I'm not sure why they'd dump it, just reporting what I saw.
I read it on the internet so it must be true. :)

If I interpret the article correctly, the state stores aren't allowed to compete with retail stores. So once it's legal at retail...

But they could sell it really, really cheap right before that day.

Or they could sell it to retail stores at break even or a slight loss, and then the retail stores could sell it.

I misunderstood, I thought it was being said that even the grocery store stock would have to be dumped. Much of the grocery store variety will be replaced with the same brands but a higher ABV, so there’s definitely a transition period coming.

There’s really not much stock that falls in that range at the state liquor store, and there aren’t that many state liquor stores (compared to grocery or convenience stores). The beer section at one of these state stores is maybe 6-8 bookshelves worth, and maybe one of those shelves stocks stuff between 4% and 5%.

This is my favorite solution. Of course, on sale here is standard price everywhere else. Still, I'd buy it.

They should just drink it, or somebody should.
I'll try.

Ive been doing my part. i got a few Breweries by my place in SLC - Shades brewing has the old 3.2 stuff on tap for $1.

just start off with a heavy IPA or 2 and then switch over

Level Crossing has discounts on the old stuff as well as putting out new stronger stuff on tap .
