I have a Suunto Ambit 3 that has a tonne of info/data you can get from it. Eg. Vert distance, actual physical distance travelled on runs, distance on lifts, total distance, number of runs, Max & average speeds for individual runs or over the whole day, ascending /descending time, heart rate, avg heart rate per run or whole day. And a heap of sport science training info like EPOC, Vo2 Max, etc.
You can download "apps" to it that other users have created that give you basically any data you want. Or you can easily create them yourself on their website if you could be bothered.
AT the end of the day I don't really have any use for the info other than my own geeky self interest. Mostly the distance I cover in a day.
I actually find some of the free apps for your phone of more use, eg. Snowzat. They give me info on Vert, distance and runs as well as showing me where all my friends and family are on the mountain in real time. Handy with kids and a way to get me jealous when I'm stuck in the office and they're on the mountain.
I wouldn't bother getting a watch just for skiing, unless you're using it for multiple sports.
Give the phone apps a try and save yourself a few hundred $$$.
