Has anyone considered that he could be a skilled marksman and had his firearm loaded?

Here's a video of another mountain lion encounter in Utah from a few years ago, but in the southern part of the state. Note the size and power of the beast, who's not pleased to be caught in a leg hold trap meant for a bobcat. The video features a DWR conservation officer, a bobcat trapper, and a very large lion. Turn up the volume to hear how ferocious a lion can be.

Why does he have to be a skilled marksman? If a single pebble broke this encounter and caused the kitty to take off at 30mph, a haphazardly "warning shot" anywhere even in the air would have also likely have been successful to end this specific encounter.

You don't always escalate to murdering wildlife and emptying your extended 30 round extended mag to show nature who's boss.

No. If he was he would’ve pulled the side arm out and fired a shot to scare it instead of telling it to f** off, or done both. Since it wasn’t charging there’s no need to shoot to kill which isn’t that easy anyway. Having some situational training is better as skilled at target shooting may be useless depending on the person.
I doubt he’d be “trail running” on a gravel road in Colorado with a rifle.

Isn’t Colorado in America, so a running with a handgun on the belt isn’t that far off base.

I wonder what this cat learned from her encounter with a human and how it might influence her in the future.

If you ever see a Sasquatch, don't go near it, just watch.

Of course we all know Bigfoot was a hoax ( robot ) , as proven by Steve Austin

The Bigfoot episode ranks right up there with the Death Probe episode.

Not likely. Well hopefully everyone carrying doesn't start up with warning shots in a mild confrontation.

Probably she will discipline the kittens more to not doddle so far behind and run to play with human strangers, in some universal way that moms know how to do that is beyond our comprehension.
It did seem very much like a younger smaller cat, so maybe 1st time mom freaking out. She'll probably have to check the mtn lion mommy blogs for best ways to get her kitten to focus and listen.

See for example this experienced dog mom that knows how to quickly gets her puppies to straighten up:

I missed this when you originally posted it but ....wow.
That is dedication to save the mountain lion.

The old saying of “the best laid plans of mice and men” applies.

So Sometimes Lady Luck stacks the deck against you.

Plan ahead, stay aware, pray luck is on your side.
