Someone got their wish. The 8.2 million pound rock will stay! I'm a bit perplexed that it costs less then $200K to realign a highway, but I suspect (hope) they know what they're talking about.

State to move highway instead of 8.5 million pound rockslide boulder, saving $200,000

Nice! Excellent boulder.
Everyone will drive by and point out that's the boulder on youtube. Marshall McCluhan would be proud.

Let's just hope someone drunk doesn't run iff the road, hit the boulder, then sue the State. There goes the $200k.

Exactly!

It's not that it costs less than $200k to realign the road but that the cost to realign the road is $200k less than the cost to remove the rock and repair the road.

So much for skimming the article. ogwink

Easy fix. Just build ramps in front of the rock. That should launch the drunks over it. No harm, no foul. :D

I think they're just covering up the fear of finding Wiley under the rock. ;)

Hmmm, @Tricia, I wonder if someone walked around the perimeter of the rock looking for coyote fingers, toes, nose, or tail peaking out.

And here we have the finished product:

Memorial Rock damage repaired on Colorado 145
The boulder sparked widespread interest across the state and was named Memorial Rock by Colorado Gov. Jared Polis because it fell over the Memorial Day weekend.

However, the boulder sits on private land, and CDOT and the Colorado State Patrol do not want sightseers to stop along the highway because of concerns about traffic safety and trespassing, Schwantes said.

“No Stopping,” “No Parking,” and “No Standing” signs are expected to be posted along the stretch in the next month.

What, no “No Jumping”?

Jeez. Youze guys. You'd have to stop, stand and/or park to climb or jump.
