You have been very fortunate. I have been with people who have had their skis stolen. I used to use gear check but now use a lock. The theory is that they could cut the cable but will steal an easier pair to get.
Yes, you wanted your day ruined, ski with someone whose skis get stolen AND YOURS DON'T. That happened to me in my twenties, which is why I always lock my skis. Mine were locked that day as well, hers were right next to mine. Her's wouldn't fit inside my lock, then they were gone. 1975.

When I ski with my son, I put one of mine and one of his in the lock. ski and pole from each locked,
