Celebrated SKINdependence Day on the recently opened north side of Rainier, up on the Flett Glacier. Drive up was a total white out, and I was worried we’d have to resort to our backup plan (mattress shopping at ikea on a quiet holiday), but the skies opened up within a mile of the trailhead. Long carry in, but the blooming fields of avalanche lilies were a welcome distraction. We planned to get up to the Russell glacier where corn conditions were reportedly prime, but clouds were starting to move in from both sides of Ptarmigan ridge, so we turned around at Observation Rock and got down ~15-20 minutes before conditions were socked in. Suncups were shallow and easy to push through. Not bad for what’s probably my last day of the season.
