The huge 20-24 day storm that has dumped a 2.8mt snow base on Mt Ruapehu is still hanging around . And there is still more to come next week
The mountain staff and crew are still battling all the accumulated rime ice, with the High Noon return station still buried and further helicopter assisted avalanche control work necessary at the top of the mountain before the High Noon can run again
The weather cleared on Wednesday morning allowing us to see the conditions up there for the first time in ages .Most of the mountain had a fresh 10 cms of overnight snow everywhere. Whilst the groomers had done a great job there was no need to ski those runs, as everything off piste was awesome. Its not every day we can ski everywhere at Turoa . But Wednesday was certainly one of them
Skiing off the Movenpick chair into the Amphitheatre and down through the Sisters was a lot of fun and totally untracked
Off the Giant chair we traversed out west to see what Sliders and the Organ Pipes were like and we weren't disappointed . The avalanche debris in Lower Sliders has been covered by fresh snow and the Organ Pipes were easily negotiated . Mangawhero Gully was 10cms of nice freshies on a soft crust..All around Raceline, Bread Run ,Main Trunk, Broadbents and Show Off stayed pristine all day.
Even without the High Noon chair being open it was one of Turoa's really epic days
Here's hoping for a lot more days like this when this absolutely crazy weather pattern finally leaves us
