Red hot ice pick? Heat will melt the edges of the holes to prevent loose material.

Don't know if it will work, but it sounds like it would be fun to try.

Yeah that works great on nonwovens but not so much on knits that have 4 way stretch. On knits it's way easy to burn through a major tensioned yarn and then it's a Highlander-grade Unravelling: There can be only none.

If you *really* want to try thermal options, find some iron-on patches, one inner and one outer, iron them on and make the cut/burn through all 3 layers.

I’m still using a hunting balaclava that I purchased at Walmart 12 years ago. It has a breath diffuser panel for the nose and mouth, goggles don’t fog. It never gets left behind.
