I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the snow today after listening to rain on and off all night in Tahoe City. We almost didn't even ski, but finally around noon made it to Alpine. We did a bunch of laps on Wolverine Bowl, which was nice and chalky, and Sunspot, which was softer, with some slick spots. We also checked out Sherwood (chunky and lumpy, but not bad) and Outer Limits off Lakeview. The snow there was just like spring corn! There were no lines anywhere, and overall the snow seemed better than before the rain. Or was it the fresh wax on my skis?

Sorta. Same general angle.. I was on the other side of the bowl out the high-t on top of S.P. Cornice. Yours looks like from the top of Xpert shortcut before the Return road split
Gotcha, yes, mine was from top of Treeline Cirque chair.

Got a couple of hours in the morning at Diamond Peak today. Another groomer day. Clear skies. The lone bump run, Thunder, was very firm and in the shade. It'll probably all soften up in the afternoon, but I had to leave by 11. No lines on Crystal Ridge Express to the summit, as usual, allows for getting in many quick laps in a short time.

Always a great Lake Tahoe view from Crystal Ridge-

No precip falling here as of yet. Looks like we are still on track to pick up 5-8” above 7000ish by tomorrow afternoon. I didn’t realize this was such a big storm since it’s just brushing us and pushing to our north. This radar as of now has it stretching all the way to northern WA. 391CF9CB-361C-41E2-9412-579AFF8A9314.jpeg

Oregon is going to be the place to be the next few days.. Just talked to my buddy up in Hood and he said they're about to get pounded!! Up to 4+ feet by Tuesday around Hood and Bachelor with 2’+ possible. Looking like Shasta is going to get a quick 15” or so tonight also

Did anyone take Donner Pass Rd. over the pass today? We always see Google Maps sending people there but never trust that. I am curious if it was faster this evening.

Today was a weird sleeper powder day at Squaw, for all the first 1.5 hours that it lasted. The snow on Granite and Solitude was very good until it became warmer and the snow magically became much heavier. The rest of the day was the usual wet powder Tahoe day, barely tolerable, but somehow still fun. Morning visibility was a challenge, hence the choice of the lifts, it got progressively better as the day went by, but of course that was offset by deteriorating snow.

Not today, but the one time I listened to the google lady and took Donner Pass Road over the pass heading west was a total mess because there was enough blowing snow onto the road that drivers in front of me got freaked out and turned around in the middle of the road before even reaching the bridge. I think there was an incident a mile ahead of me? Friends who left 30 minutes after me and took 80 before pulling onto 40 at Soda Springs wound up right behind me. I think the only time it pays off to go over the pass on 40 is before the google lady tells people to do it because a significant number of people following the google lady are unprepared either mentally or vehicularly to drive over the pass.

I was passing trough at around a little after 1pm and 80 looked like it was stopped or at a crawl, so I took Donner Pass Rd. The first time I took it. We moved at a decent pace and only slowed down a few times. Not sure if it ended up being faster but do believe it was as 80 wasn't moving.

Also, Google sent me to I5 in Sacramento. First time for this as well.

Mixed bag at Sugar Bowl today: on the plus side - snow was firm but with more than enough loose material on top to keep turns predictable and smooth; on the minus - all things in balance, for every blue bird day there is a foggy hell ... and today was my balance day in the viz department.

It was R2 chain controls on 80 west until Kingvale till 11:30am, this most likely causes the backup.

Yeah, I noticed that when I hit Norden today going up 80. Glad I went on to Squaw.

Sitting in a room at Stateline after skiing Heavenly today, fed, long hot showered, dressed warm to walk the streets a bit in the cold darkness, wander casino some. High winds by early pm shut several lifts including the gondola. Thanks to lift management that they reopened most after winds subsided some, so I could download from the gondola without taking the shuttle from the California base.

HV was good choice as snow quality up at Little Dipper elevations, 8.5k to 9.5k is exc with much loose dry windblown. First run down Little Dipper stopped down at tower 10. But just 2 lift rides before Comet Express closed so was banished to Stagecoach where I ran the whole bump line of moderate to easy bumps under the lift twice nonstop that was also a bit bony. Tomorrow could be the best day in bumps for me this season as LD will be in sun. Just might run the whole fall line as am increasingly in a visual zone where each turn location is locked in flowing and effort like riding a bike eyes closed. Too much fun for an old guy.

Little Dipper at Heavenly was so good today that instead of driving home will also ski a third day tomorrow so am again at a Stateline lodge tonight. Thursday is forecast to be the start of a balmy few days.

Well that puts a major damper on things at homewood this season.. Pretty much 1/2 the terrain would now require a shuttle, and than a lift (or 2 really) for full access.

Feels like this season has been hit with more mechanical issues than usual. Diamond Peak lost Crystal Ridge Express again on Sunday (it was down for several days in the week leading into MLK weekend too). It's back up now, but losing that chair cuts half of be DP and some of the best snow at the top off.
