This past week, on the north, Ruby Gulch, side of Mt Parnassus (a mountain also above I-70 to the northeast of Hermann Gulch exit 118), I could see there was ice and what looked like snow/ice or snow/hail mix in large patches at something like 12,700-12,900 feet or so, above me. (I was only at about 12,300-12,500 ft or so.)
Almost certainly temporary, but hopeful.

Twice before, this past week, I've hiked past much smaller ice/hail remains - near the top of the Beavers at A Basin and near the top of Lift One, Chet's Dream, at Loveland.
(At least it's something, in such a warm late September.)

The Summit Daily reported today that both A-Basin and Keystone started snowmaking calling it "the race to open." Here we go !

Looks like the pattern has set up. Places south of Wyoming get mainly very windy conditions and little to no precip. Looking really good for interior Wa, Id, plus MT and WY.
Colorado... not looking good for now. Need much more NW push to take that weather south to us.

There has been a big blocking high pressure in the southeast, unusual for this time of year.

Nighttime low temps are what matter in early Oct for snowmaking, just as soon not watch early season snow get shelled down in Dec anyway.

So much this.

The eager beaver part of me wants it to snow now.

The calm part of me wants it to not snow until November in any meaningful amount, and then continue to dump. Else anything over 30 degrees in the backcountry is off limits til April.

Well you could also win the Mega millions jackpot which is about as likely:roflmao:. It's CO we gonna have avalanche danger but you knew that and I also want non stop dumps to a 100" base on the dry ground starting 11/1.:beercheer:

Hey now -- we had some green spells two years back in Jan & Feb.

Of course...that's because we had sunshine, no-snow and warm temps for a week. And then right back to PWL....

Fall colors and blowing snow until noon. Couple of warm days then some help from mother nature.

And bonus -- preview of Loveland's next avy-dog-in-training. Just 11 weeks old.

I tried to get a shot yesterday that would have been awesome. Watering the golf course and blowing snow up high in the same shot. Didn't work out. Snow is holding pretty well up high. Then of course if you want to see snow down lower there is always this early season safe bet. Hard to believe it was just about melted off on Fri.
