I got out today at Breck. My brother had mentioned fresh was available and on his rec, I found some.

The view of Snow White (where they were bombing today).

The top of the fresh.

I met a friend after this run and we went to Peak 6. Serenity Bowl was looking quite under utilized. If I'd had more time, I would have hiked for it.

@nay , how old are your sons?

21 and 20.

Day 3 was plan a tour based on all the potential available info. My team was a little bit conservative, but that meant lapping perfect lower angle powder under the ridge. Great course, beginner stuff is fun.

mr. skimo here. Super light weight 65mm waist more fun on the way up.

Fatty M5’s with Shifts a wee bit more fun on the way down.

mr. 120mm bentchetlers rejoins us for the return. This is nature vs. nurture on full display.

@nay , fun to do that, and even more fun to be able to do it with your kids! I hope my girls will still ski with me by the time they are 21!

Looks like you had some good snow, and you certainly have ‘interesting’ conditions for an AIARE course, right? As far as I’ve looked, most of CO has one or more buried weak layers, and plenty of wind slabs. Lots to see and consider.

Another good day at Breckenridge, midweek in late January is really low crowd here. Very nice!

This is where I'm staying for a three nights as I pass through Summit County, CO and then drive further west. Good place. It's a seemingly well run hostel for about $80 per night including good breakfast. I may write up a more detailed review later.

Yep, plenty of interesting weak layers and we had great snow on the last day - about 10” over a firm layer was perfect. The storm right before Christmas seems to have left a buried surface hoar layer in a lot of zones and then there’s the wind slab. I’m just glad it was warm with lots of standing around - that course would have been brutal if it had been frigid.

So it's a completely normal CO snowpack

Started great, but way colder and windier than forecast hardened any deeper snow pretty quickly. Caught the very first Ridge Cat of the season. Which was not a great use of time conditions-wise with breakable crust, but gotta do it.

The upper section.

Lower down.

It was just me until 3 people and a dog arrived as I finished my second lap.

Yum.

After two years in a row of skiing Super Bowl Sunday at Loveland, I've decided that's the best place for me on that day. Although I was slow getting up and out of the house, i made it to Loveland in 45 minutes and home in an hour.
Not many skiers on the mountain for a Sunday and was was able to ski right on the chair for multiple laps on lift 8. Had originally planned to ski the ridge, but with winds in excess of 50 mph up high, I felt my best bet was to do runs off north side of lift 8 and i wasn't disappointed. Snow appeared to be getting blown off the ridge and ending up on Hook em Horns and In the Mood runs. Snow there was like sand from a sand dune. Soft and fun.

I love skiing on Super Bowl Sunday. Sadly, I spent most of my day writing a brief due tonight for one of my classes.

Loveland was wild today. By afternoon the amount of frozen silt flowing down the mountain was unreal. 9 shut down around 1 for wind, but we did one lap off Challenger. Nice and soft SE facing. Then over to 8 for some sweet usual suspects.

A me sighting.

The boy.

And then we’d planned to hit the Ridge Cat, but 9 closed. And Bennet’s and pretty much everything middle of the mountain was perfectly wind loaded.

ms. nay and another me sighting with plumes of snow blowing over the ridge.

Breckenridge survived the high temps (51 in town on Sunday), high winds and cold temps (2* this morning in town) to ski a lot better than expected after only 5" reported (3" overnight).

Starting with the usual suspects on Indy chair, I enjoyed nice pow over cord runs on Wirepatch and Claimjumper before venturing over to T-Bar. The groomers were not at all icy under the groom and pow.

Horseshoe Bowl looked like it wasn't open yesterday but I wasn't able to confirm that. The 5 inches of snow was moved around a bit, varying in depths from 3" to 7" or 8" and more. Chute 1 (below the picnic table) was bonus. The surface below the fresh was firm, but not icy. I saw a poor guy that got suckered into skiing Pika off of the usually groomed area. He said patrol was on the way when I shouted 'Go Home' from the T-Bar. Just kidding. I asked if he was OK. The next lap Patrol was putting a restraint on his arm and preparing to sled him down. My next run was a nice one down Pika and into Cucumber. I pioneered a new line (for myself at least) to get a better angle on the usual and was pleased with the results.

Peak 7 opened in a stealthy fashion; I saw a non-patroller on the top traverse to Whale's Tail and beyond and made tracks for Imperial. I landed on a chair with 'Chrome Dome' (people that frequent Breck on power days will know who I mean) and I led the way towards CJ's. I took 10 or so turns in what I call Powder 8s, hooked a left to traverse to CJs and watched as CD followed patrol tracks down CJ's. I followed. My tracks are the fourth from the looker's right.

It is good to be (close to) first! On my next T-Bar ride my tracks were still alone in Powder 8s.

Why everyone jumps into Whales Tail and Vertigo mystifies me makes me smile.

IMG_20200204_104332053_HDR.jpg

One more run in CJs and I was done for the day as w@rk was waiting in my office.

I dressed well for the day and was happy to be comfy all morning long.
