I think now at noon looking at the satellite loop, we snow peons can conclude that little if any of the stormy cold core pool that I mentioned at sunrise moving southeast will offer anything more for the Tahoe Sierra. Thus central Sierra wise, storm has just met minimal forecast totals in the north, thank you (we needed it!), while under performing to the south mostly because the cold core low behind the front decided to have fun with local meteorologists a bit more (because I'd bet they still haven't burned all their skis) and instead visit Disneyland. ogsmile

Personally as someone skiing days ago familiar with the teeth chattering layer just below, am now not motivated to join the choiceless weekend mob and instead wait (but not patiently at this point) till the Monday system shows its hand.

Smart.
I skied N* today. The fresh snow I could get on was really, really nice (light), but there is no base. There was a run lookers left of the Zephyr chair that was ungroomed powder (a little choppy when we got there, but you could find untracked). It was really fun, but then you're skiing along and there are shrubs sticking out of the snow, etc. They had a sign at the top of that run advising to "ski with a friend," due to unmarked hazards.
On the Backside, only Burnout was open and was crowded and choppy. Martis was the only run open on Lookout Mountain. That had quite a few ice patches, and the worst was that they had snow guns blasting the entire length of the run. I appreciate their snowmaking efforts, but almost every run had guns blowing and it got annoying.
Comstock lift had a long line all day. It's going to be a zoo there this weekend.

Our predicted 3' of snow turned into 4". Very disappointing.

I plan to ski tomorrow but I'm already dreading the crowds.

Squaw was insanely good today. Like, really really really good.

I think I had 9-10 runs of untracked fresh pow before people started showing up.

I’m about 90%. Feels great.
I'm jealous! That's where I really wanted to go, but was skiing with Epic Pass Holders.

For an intermediate (groomer zoomer) condtions are great and have been at Heavenly since mid december as they've have heavy investment in manmade and manicuring the slopes. They are as good on the groomed slopes as a regular year. More snow won't make it more perfect, but it will open up more blue options, expand the edges and relieve traffic and crowds (which will be an issue).
While Heavenly does have a lot of snowmaking, they did not open anything on CA until ? I was there on 1/1 and they only let you go to NV from Sky Chair as connection from top of Sky to Ridge Run was not there until sometime in Jan. I'm not sure if it was due to saving money on snow-making or temps not cooperating or they thought that was acceptable. It does look like they've opened High Roller (which has looked ready to go for a while) and lower Liz's and Ellie's if you can believe their report.

If you fancy a challenge try the pinnacles run. It is a single black but check conditions at the top before dropping. After noon, the alignment with the sun and lake takes my breath away literally double rainbow style.
Pinnacles has not opened yet so if you ski it now, besides possibly damaging your skis and body, you are risking a 4 week suspension of your pass.

At the end of your day try downloading gunbarrel chair.
On download the tram, depending on what gets you closer to where you parked. You cannot ski down to CA base so far this year. I have seen Heavenly open the Face (aka East Bowl, under the tram) on mad-made, but don't see current ownership making that effort or investment.

On Friday 1/12 I was glad to quit before noon with my friend who had to get to a boot fitting appt. as runs were getting crowded enough with a mix of speeds and abilities to get dangerous. It does look like they've opened High Roller (which has looked ready to go for a while) and lower Liz's and Ellie's if you can believe their report.

Random question of the day. I fly into RNO on Sunday around 1 but have to kill 2-3 hours before my boss lands and I pick him up. Any good eats or interesting things to see near the airport? I’ll have a rental car.

Also any recs for food in Minden?

@coskigirl

Pegs Eggs is an interesting breakfast in Reno.

A glider ride in Soar Minden might be fun (weather permitting) especially if you are hanging out in Minden.

Boomtown's lobster buffet is degenerate. Probably ruin you for skiing the next day.

We hit balls in the GSR driving range. Cold but it entertained the kids.

If it's raining (snowing!), just go to Circus Circus and watch the show and gamble.

I usually have go to Home Depot to get stuff for work...

Sadly, no skiing this trip. Giving anti-trust training for one of our recently purchased companies. In Sunday out Tuesday. If it dumps y’all can thank me for not bringing my gear.

The Pho place in the Costco shopping center is real good. If you want good Pizza, True New York in Sparks is good...you wil be back in plenty of time to get the boss. Taco's El Rey on McCarran is very good. Plenty of All you can eat sushi places. We will be working other wise we would meet you.

I just got back from 4 days in Tahoe. My wife and I ended up splitting our time in N* and Heavenly. Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions. The views at Heavenly were great. We ended up spending most of our time on the blue groomers and I thought they were in decent condition. A little bit bummed we missed the snow today, but we still had a good time. N* needed the snow badly. When we left yesterday, everything below Comstock was deteriorating rapidly. Not much was open on the Backside or Western Territory. I did one run on Washoe and it was completely frozen on the upper half. Hopefully, with the recent snow, none of this matters. I might be back in mid February, so hopefully the snow keeps falling.

Pocket storm sitting over heavenly/minden currently dropping a few inches in the past couple of hours. Up to 4-6 inches tonight I guess. Not sure where it came from? Currently not snowing on the north lake image.jpeg

Got a few laps before work. Not the huge dump we needed but stuff was skiing smoooooth and I really was not hitting a whole lot of crap under the snow. That first couple laid in dense and the top layer skied nice and light.

Me personally I would be skiing upper Nevada at heavenly tomorrow if I didn't have work as its been snowing lightly from luther to Slt this evening.

Overland Hotel in Gardnerville (next to Minden, across from Sharkey's casino) is highly recommended for family-style Basque food. Lamb steaks topped with fried garlic is our favorite. Go hungry as they give you a lot of food. Also try their Picon Punch or other special drinks.
